Slow Open dialog box

Hi,

Could anyone give me some hint on how to solve this tricky problem?

I have Windows 2000 and AutoCAD 2002. When I first installed Windows 2000
and then AutoCAD 2002 there where no problem. But after a while, I have
installed and uninstalled plenty of programs, the open dialog box takes
forever to populate.

I have used File Monitor from www.systeminternals.com and found out that
when it takes forever AutoCAD is looking at every file in the folder. On an
instalation where there is no problem AutoCAD is not looing at every file
like this. It must be something that is triggering AutoCAD to do this. But I
don't know what that is.

It looks like the IRP_MJ_CREATE process really slowes it down.

Hi Jimmy,

Do you have 100's of files or folders in the default open folder? If
so, here are a few Microsoft tweaks I have found that might help. (Try them
one at a time so you know which one helps, then let us know!)

1) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q177266 - Remote
Directory Lists Are Slower Than Local Directory Listings.

2) It also appears that every time Windows scans through a list files or
folders on an NTFS drive, it updates the "LastAccessDate" of each one!
For more information, search for "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" on a search
engine, or try this one:

A few more...
   - Try disabling your virus protection. If this helps, you may want to
make sure it's only scanning "Executable and Document" files, rather than
ALL files.
   - Is it only slow when opening the "Look in" drop down list? If so,
make sure there are no invalid mapped network drives listed in My Computer.

Chris, thanks for your ideas.
It doesn't matter if there are 10 or 1000 files. I've tried both. Of course
it's matters I never waited till it had opened the 1000+ file folder. since
it takes approx 1 sec/file.
Anyway I tried all of your suggestions but it didn't help.
There is no problem in other applications like Word, Excel, Explorer, Dos,
Volo View Express.
The problem comes in AutoCAD 2002 and also AutoCAD LT 2002.
The question is why this behavior is triggered since on a clean installation
the files are not even accessed.

Hi Jimmy,

As you said, very tricky... Here are a "few" more thoughts and questions
for you:

1) If your server uses a Microsoft Distributed File System, I'm afraid I
will have to call upon the all powerful "Unsupported" command. See
http://support.autodesk.com/getdoc.asp?id=TS66981
2) Does the problem only happen when you have the Today page minimized in
the background? Try closing it.
3) If you last open a drawing file from the local hard drive, then use the
OPEN command again, is it still very slow opening?
4) What kind of a server is R:\? Novell, Microsoft, or just a share on
another workstation?
5) Is it still as slow if you create a share on another computer, and copy
a bunch of DWG files there? This could prove that it's only a problem with
server access.
6) We could be scanning the files on your desktop when the Open dialog box
initializes. Make sure there are no invalid shortcuts or drive mappings
listed.
7) Scan your system for "spyware", which is usually installed with music
sharing programs. They have been known to interfere with network
performance. Try Ad-Aware to clean things up: http://www.lavasoft.de or
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
8) Have you installed any DWG plugin utilities for Explorer? Maybe
something that allows you to see a DWG preview in Explorer? If so, try
uninstalling them.
9) In AutoCAD, go to Tools > Options > Files: Are there ANY paths listed
in this tab that point to your network? Try setting them local to see if
things speed up. I've seen a UNC path in the Device Driver path cause most
AutoCAD commands to be very slow.
10) Try removing all the shortcuts created under the following path on your
hard drive:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD\Recent
(or %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD\Recent )
11) Update your network card drivers to the latest version.
12) Have you added anything to the Shortcut bar on the left side of the
Open dialog box? If so, right-click over one of the icons, and pick
"Restore Standard Folders".
13) Could you post a "full", zipped filemon log to the Customer-Files
newsgroup. I might be able to spot something else in there. If it's not
too huge, include the entire AutoCAD startup access history, and File >
Open.
14) Try setting the Open box View to "List" rather than Detail, and turn
off the preview.

Ok.. I think my caffeine levels are about low enough to go home now. Let
me know the results.

By any chance are you running LDT? There was a known issue with LDT and slow
file opening...

1) We have DFS mapped as S:\ on all PC's. But it's only under evaluation and
we don't use it yet. But the problem is only on some PC's, not everyone so I
don't think it's related to this.

2) Not related to this

3) It's even slow on C:\

4) R:\is a Windows 2000 file server

5) It's still the same problem

6) Tried to clean the desktop compleatly. Not a solution

7) Nothing suspicious found

8) Autodesk Drawing Explorer is installed on systems with the problem and
without the problem.

9) Doesn't help. I've even tried running AutoCAD LT 2002 after disconnecting
the network connection and using a resetted clean profile with nothing
pointing to other than the local disk.

10) Done. When I a clean install of AutoCAD I delete most in registry and
every trace like this too. But not working.

11) Latest done.

12) Tried that.

13) Will do.

14) Doen't help.

Thanks but still no improvement.

Some thoughts... I tried to log in as a nother user on the same PC I had
problem with and had no problem at all. So it looks like to me that it
relates to the user registry.

Solution at last!

I hunted this down. I don't know what else this setting is for but by
changing it everything works fine. Do you know what this byte do?

Set the two-digit value in the 17:th byte to 00.

Observe that you have to manually change this one byte in REGEDIT. You have
to restart AutoCAD to have the effect.

All,

Does anyone know what Windows setting is stored at byte 17 in the ShellState
registry setting?

For example, I have found that byte 5 changes when I change the following
setting:
Recycle Bin Properties > Global > "Display delete confirmation dialog".
