single license server replacement

Our single license server is starting to show signs it's advanced age. It
is a PIII 450Mhz, 512MB Ram PC and I think it has started to die. I would
like to use a different computer in the office as the license server. We
are about to update to LDT companion 2007. Can I manage the licenses for
2007 on the new computer while managing the licenses for 2006 on the old
computer? Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

No problem to have multiple licence server for Autodesk product on your
network.
One for 2006 and the other for 2007.

Difference between 2006 and 2007 network tools :
LMtools 10.1.5 in 2006 and 10.1.8 in 2007
The Network Installation wizard 2007 can only create 2007 image not 2006 and
previous version.
Content of the .lic files is different. New section (Plist) in 2007. 2007
Lic file can be used with LMtools 10.1.5 (2006)(Plist will be ignore in that
case).

If you are on subscription you can get new license files for all of it and run them all on the new server.
Three methods to change the workstations to look for the new server.
Do a search in this newsgroup. Been discussed may times.

Thanks Franck. Unfortunately, I created a deployment and updated the
license file on the old server already. I am assuming I will need to
contact Autodesk to get a new license file for the different computer.

Can't I just remove 2006 and install 2007 from the new server after setting
up the new license server? I am trying to run the 2006 from the old server
and then switch users over to 2007 on the new server.

Scott,

you can go to this URL to have in real time your licence file :
Indicate your Server name, Mac address, Serial number and model of
implementation (Redundant, distributed, unique).

Yea, that will work.
Just trying to play defense against your 450 dying before everything is done.
Please wait until at least service pack 1.

I contacted Autodesk Subscription with my situation and they told me to
expect problems with getting licenses if I try to run two license managers
on one network.

If you use Distributed mode you can have multiple licence server on the same
network!

No, that is true. The License Manager is aware of additional services of itself out there. In the situation where your application is set up as a Single server configuration, if it finds the other NLM and the wrong license, then you will have problems.

While you can run multiple NLMs with Distributed or Redundant setups, the application is setup to recognize the other servers and roll-over when necessary.

Running two License Managers for Single server setup is a bad idea. Just get your old license on the new server under Subscription and combine the files. It will be easier and more convenient for you in the long run.

In fact, I have seen one NLM display the status of the other NLM on the network instead of itself! There are many reasons to avoid it. Do yourself a favor.

I do have a single server NLM setup. I am going to move my NLM to a new
computer and avoid having two NLMs running at the same time.

Thanks for you help.
