Have tried everything but keep getting a message stating " There is a problem with this windows installer package. a DLL required for this install to complete could not be run." I have tried downloading and installing through the virtual agent which did not work. any suggestions?

Welcome to the community..

Not sure if the auto-response helped you out or not, but go to the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product.  Download all of the parts first (some applications may only have a single part to download) and then go to your download location.  Extract (double click) part 1 (or the single part download) and in a few seconds the extraction will start.   It will then prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk and once the extraction is finished the installation will start. Also make sure you have admin rights, UAC is turned off and Anti-Virus temporary disabled prior to installation.

Sorry I just realized in your last sentence you said you already tired the virtual agent.   So First download and install the materiial library here

Then run your installation again.   Make sure you have admin rights, UAC is off and the anti-virus disabled.

Still no luck UAC, anti virus, and firewall are all off I have admin rights. As soon as I try and install the materials library I get the same error message as if I were installing the entire program.

Hello @Anonymous

Let's give this a try:

The following possible solution only applies to when attempting to install an Autodesk product, the 2016 Material Library installation fails with the error, "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A DLL required for the install to complete count not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Go to the C:\Autodesk\Autodesk_Revit_2016_English_Win_64bit_R2_dlm\ folder and make a copy of the setup.ini file. You should see Copy setup.ini in the folder.

Open the setup.ini file and search for POSTREQUISITE=WORKFLOWS;CM2016;CMILB2016;CMILL2016 and put an # sign at the beginning of the line.  Now it should appear #POSTREQUISITE=WORKFLOWS;CM2016;CMILB2016;CMILL2016 Save the file and try the installation again.

Please respond to this post and let us know if your installation was successful.

Thank you for taking part in our community forum! Please accept my solution if my post fully resolved your issue.

Kind Regards,

HI BJ.C,

I have the same problem.

Your solutions was near to solve it... but not absolutely. Close, but no cigar..

I copied and moified the "setup.ini" file as you sugested.

Before doing it the "DLL message" apeared on stage "7 of 8 left". With your solution it get to stage "4 to 8 left"

Any ideas to get to the end?

Thank you

How are you installing the application?  By using the Autodesk Virtual Agent method?

Hi Mark and thanks for your answer.

Yes, I'm using Virtual Agent Method. I donwloaded both files and decompressed them in a c:/Autodesk folder. As soon as the first part is decompressed, the installation setup is launched, wich I stop untill the second file get decompressed. After both files are decompressed, I launch the setup again.

Of course I also follow all the recomendations I could find on the web:

Verify administrationn permissions

Desable anti virus

Replacement of libraries

Add # before some lines on setup.ini folder

...

It's unbelivible that a company of the size of Autodesk can't solve a simple installation issue. We shoudn't not even be woried of any Virtual Agent installation or library replacement or # replacement on an setup.ini folder. We shoud have the possibility of just download the files, click on setup and thats it! It doesn't seams to be a isolated problem but realy a Revit - windows 10 compatibility problem. Unbelivible!

And also desabling the .NET

Always the same problem:

Step 5 of 9:

"there is a problem with this windows installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor".

I understand your frustration but many install Revit and do not have a problem.   Each PC is unique and some (like you) experience problems.  However I saw this in your posting: "I donwloaded both files and decompressed them in a c:/Autodesk folder. As soon as the first part is decompressed, the installation setup is launched, wich I stop untill the second file get decompressed. After both files are decompressed, I launch the setup again."

This is incorrect and not saying it is causing the problem but...  You need to download (from the Autodesk Virtual Agent) all of the correct parts first for the version of REvit you have. When all the parts are finished downloading, then extract (double click on) _001_00x.sfx.exe.  There's no  need to extract any other parts, since this is done automaically.  From there the installation will take place.

I would also recommend that you have all the latest Windows 10 update, proper access to your temp (%temp%) folder location, run the Windows Cleanup utility (link in my signature) and I'm also tagging @TravisNave and @RDAOU to see if they have any other ideas.

Thanks again Mark for your answer.

In fact I never decompress de files from Virtual agent since they downlaod already decompressed. It's just that as soon as the firs download finishes, the installins procedure is automaticaly lauched, without attending to the second part to finish...

Nevertheless, I just got an answer from customer support, wich is quite anoying:

"We are sorry to inform you that Revit 2016 is not compatible with Windows 10. You can verify it by referring the link given below.

Hey @Anonymous

Form what I have read I can definitly say that your system (PC's) is ODD! it is defenitly not a common behavior, when downloading specifically from Virtual Agent, that the installation launches without you envoking it (in this case initiating the decompression of the downloaded files) ... As a matter of fact no system should allow that! if it does you need to solve that because it is not safe (This is not an Autodesk issue...it is something on your side)

I tried to look for an installation log which you might have attached or a print of the DLL error you are getting but couldn't find that...So I am not sure if it is a corrupt DLL; unaccessible DLL or non-existant DLL...However; from previous experiences when it is a Windows Installer related DLL you got 2 options:

  1. Download that DLL and replace on your computer (back up the old one first if any exists) then try to run the installation again.
    • Unfortunatly DLL's do NOT come separate from any software developer so your only resort are online third party database. Personally; I have personally done that more than a couple of times when I had no other choice or option...However; you should note that if you decide to do that you would do it at your own risk.
  2. Rollback or downgrade to a previous version of Windows (either 8.1 or 7) ...in 90% of the cases that fixes the Windows Installer issue.

Thank you RDAOU for taking the time to read and answering my posts.

I understand your appreciation about my odd system. I didn't say that the files from VA were downloaded already decompressed. I said that the installation program was launched before the second file got decompressed. For that I accept a previous recomendation saying that there is no need to decompress the part 2 file

Concerning the DLL, I agree with you that one of the possible solutions is to download the missing DLL. Unfortunately, any hint of the missing DLL file is done on the error message. All I get is what I transcibed on my posts. I attach to this post a screen capture of the message just in case.

Anyway... I decided to install Revit 15. I took this decision after reciving for a second time an awarness fron custommer support saying that Revit 2016 is not compatible with windows 10.

See below:

Dear ...,

🙂 With all due respect to whoever sent you that email...their statement is governed by Autodesk's policy. Revit 2016 can be downloaded/installed and run on Windows 10.

Following to your post; I tried to download Revit 2016 Architecture from Autodesk Virtual Agent...it is a two part download and unlike other Autodesk products you need to download both manually...Meaning to say you download parts 1 & 2 to a folder on your computer separately (placed in same folder) then you Run Part 1...the extraction will be carried out and without prompt installation will start right after. I recorderd this for you to see the installer's behavior and how it should work normally.

  • Personal observation:
    1. when I extract part 1 and let part 2 extract automatically (assuming that it does) I later on face issues with Autodesk Revit Content Libraries not being installed.
    2. HOWEVER:  when I extract part 1 >>> then  cancle installation when it runs >> extract part 2 to same folder C:\ where part 1 was extracted >> run Set up manually after both part were extracted manually (INSTALLATION RUNS COMPLETE WITH NO MISSING CONTENTS) but this was observed on some computers not all.

In addition to the above; if you were able to doanload Revit 2015 then it would be because Revit 2015 is 1 single part...ie: your issue lies within windows settings. I think it might be the windows 10 autorun feature which is not allowing for the installation files to download complete hence you are receiving the DLL error since part two contents are either all missing or partially...To solve this (you should do this anyways to disable Autorun on Windows 10)

  1. Open Registry Editor by pressing Windows + R key combination, type in regedit and press Enter.
  2. If prompted by UAC, click on Yes to continue.
  3. Go to [su_note]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
    \CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    [/su_note]
  4. If the above key doesn’t exist, create it.
  5. In right-side pane, look for and create a new DWORD value if not exist NoDriveTypeAutorun and set the value as described in above table.
  6. Close Registry Editor.
  7. Restart your computer.

Hello again RDAOU,

I relly thank you very much for your time and your interest on my issue.

I agree in the fact that Autodesk's answer is institutional and I know many Revit 2016 are running on W10. It's just that Autodesk doesn't give support... you are doing it. Thank you again.

Concerning the extract, I've already tried both ways: Automatic launching without manual extraction and manual launching after manual extraction of both files. Unfortunately none of those worked. Both give me the DLL error.

Concerning the single or two parts downloading: I originally tried to install revit 2016 student version (no manual download on two parts as it is from Virtual Agent) and that was the beginning of the problems. I finaly installed Revit 2015 student version from the same site, and it worked.

I also tried the solutions you gave in another post wich normally worked for another revit 2016 studient version installation... unfortunatelly it didn't work on my odd 🙂 computer.

I'l try the autorun disabeling...

Thanks again.
