Revit 2012 Update 2 takes over 5 hours to apply

I have been installing Revit Structure 2012 Update 2 on a bunch of computers that are all right next to each other in the office. They are on the same network switch, use the same Internet connection. They are all Dell T3500, M6500 or M6600 computers running Windows 7 64 bit except for 1 still on XP 64 bit. They generally all have the same setup and software installed.

So why on 3 computers the update took 5-10 minutes to complete, and on the rest over 5 hours, with the longest being 6 hours?!?!!!!??!!? The updates were are started within 15 minutes of each other, and the 3 quick updates were not the first or last computers to start the upgrade process.

Update 1 was similar, but took no longer than 4 hours.

Why, why, why?

Hi Mike;

There can be several factors included when trying to figure out updates speed. The differnce in these updates is pretty extreme so there's likely several factors in this.

- downloading the updates all at that same time may have killed the bandwidth

- Processes running on the individual machines may have cause that machine to install slower

There's many factors that I could list but it's very difficult to narrow down. If you want a good test it would be install 1 at a time to make sure bandwidth isn't an issue and time the installs. I suspect the time would be a bit closer

Hi Dwayne,

I have recently tried installing the update on one machine at a time and still get long install times. The quickest being 2 hours. It could be a bandwidth issue being the major issue.

Why can we be given an option to download all the content separately in a single download, place it locally on the LAN and then point the update exe on each computer to get the content from the LAN location, not across the Internet? That would speed up the install and also save us money on bandwidth costs! We have over 200 computers to update.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

All the updates can be downloaded and installed locally rather than grabbing individually from a network share. Pointing to the "updater.exe" sounds like a task that the Cad Manager Control Utility.  I haven't used it that much but likely do the trick

Hi...

I'm experiencing the same behaviour... I downloaded manually the two updates and extracted the MSP files, then I build an AdminImage network installation of Revit Architecture 2012 on a network share, choosing to install the two updates (MSP) from a folder of the same network share. When I start installing, it takes a quite long time to install the main program, but it goes on little by little til the end... installs update 1, installs update 2 almost until the end... when it "hangs" for hours!

I've Windows 7 64bit... on process list, I see 3 msiexec.exe and one msiexec.exe*32 running, and a Setup.exe *32

Tomorrow I'll try installing on a clear machine from DVD and using the update 1.exe and update 2.exe I downloaded, but I hope to solve the problem with the adminimage!

thanks

Marco

Hi,

Had the same issue and resolved as follow:

Copy the update 2 file to the local hard drive.

Disable LAN connection

Run Update

Re-enable LAN

I added the update to the deployment file but then it takes forever to finish the deployment, getting stuck on "Installing Content". I haven't waited more than 2 hours so I'm not sure if it actually finishes at some point.

I haven't tested to see if it helps toI disable the internet connection via the proxy/firewall.
