I run autocad 14.01 and lyte at my network which consists of a novell 4.11
server and workstations both win98 and nt and win2k .The problem is with
certain autocad files when trying to open an autocad dwg file in the network
saying the file can only be opened in read only and doesnt let the users
write to it.This happens both with the novell server and previous the file
server was a windows machine with any workstation in the network also.when
the file is saved locally theres no problems at all is when trying to open
certain files from the file server.anybody got a clue

I am experiencing a similar problem on a WinNT server. Last week, I suddenly
could no longer write AutoCAD files to my usual network drive ("X"). I can write
to any other network or local drive, and I can write any other file (Word,
Excel, etc) to my "X:" drive. When opening a drawing file from this drive, I get
an alert box: "Unable to write to that directory. Do you want to continue?
(Y/N)"

This is a new phenomenom as of last week - we've had this server in place for
well over a year without any problems. All directory permissions are set
appropriately (I have full control). There are no .DWK files that I can find,
and no one else has access to my directory to open these files.

The cumbersome work around is to save to the desktop and then move the files via
Windows into the proper directory.

Any thoughts?

I have seen some this proble on our novell server. the directory where your drawing is keep may be set to read only.
for example dir1\dir2\files
if dir1 is read only but dir2 is not read only the files will still work
if dir1 is read only or not but dir2 is read only the files will give you this message Unable to write to that directory. Do you want to
continue?
(Y/N)"
