moving network license from one server to another.

What is the process for moving a network license from one server to another?  Our current one is being decommissioned and replaced with a new one.  I can't find any clear way to do this.  Is there a way to call Autodesk for assistance.  An email address to a licensing team would work also.  I can't find either.

Thanks

Andy

You simply need to install the Autodesk Network License Manager on the new server and request a new license file from Autodesk Activations.  You can get this new file by calling Autodesk at 1-800-551-1490.  They will require your serial numbers for all the products that you need licensed as well as the hostname and MAC address of the new server.

I have a question about this.  After the new server is set up, how do you point each cad user's autocad to the correct server?

There are a few ways.  Once you retire the old NLM and launch AutoCAD, it should ask you.  You can also edit the LICPATH.LIC file in the root of the Autodesk product install folder.  But the best way is to create a System Environment Variable named ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE with the value of @SERVERNAME where servername is the hostname of the new NLM server.

One thing to note, when you call the number listen to the prompts.  When I entered the licensing queue it tells you to have your Serial Number, Request Code, or Host Name and ID (MAC) ready.

So I was moving a license for a company we acquired a few years back and the server is in a completely different state.  I had the current host name and MAC in front of me but then the rep got on he insisted that he could not help me without having the Serial number off the media.  I explained that this media was in a different state and probably lost in the bottom of someones desk drawer but proposed that he looked up my account by host name and ID.  Well he said that he could not help me without the serial number off the media.  I then got a little irked, I told him that he could look up our account by the current license information I had in front of me.  He again said that without the Serial number he could not help me.  Now I was ticked, so I told him this was crap and I was going to call my sales guy and hung up.  I guess I wasn't having a good morning.  I took a deep breath and remembered the line from when I entered the queue.  So I called back and luckily got another rep, named Rain, who was wonderful.  He had me send an email to the licensing team attention him with my current license, new host and MAC, and my contact info.  Within an hour I had my new license file emailed to me.

There are some capable representatives that are willing to help you at Autodesk Activations.  But every once in a while you run into one that doesn't have all of their ducks in a row.  Glad you were able to get your license file.

Travis, I tried editing the license.lic file and adding the environment variable but neither work.   Am i supposed to enter the port number before the @ sign?

This install was from a packaged install where the user didn't need to enter the CD key.  Am I up a creek with this type of install?

I am getting an Error [1.5.-18]

-18 is somewhat of a different error.  It generally means that the product is not supported on that server.  This is typically due to some other issue.  Are you sure that your license manager is up and running and it is handing out the appropriate licenses that match your installed product?  You might verify the server status as well as the debug.log file on the NLM server.

As for the system environment variable for ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE the value starts with @ and is followed by your server's hostname.

Yeah, looks good to me too.  What product are you launching when you get the -18 error?

Ah, that would be why you get the -18.  You do not have AutoCAD 2008 licenses on the server.  Your server is set for 2007 licenses.  You nee to put your 2008 license file on there.

Don't I look like the foolish one... I have replied to Autodesk why they didn't reissure me my licenses like I sent them.  I guess the gloves may have to go back on.  Thanks Travis.  Hopefully it is that easy.

Once you stand up the new License Server, will both license servers run in parallel untill you point all users to the new server?

It's not advised to run more than one NLM on the same network as it can cause unexpected issues.  You should retire the old NLM and bring aboard the new one.  You should not have any issues.  The clients will prompt you for the location of the new NLM.
