Maya 2014 "application file stopped working" on startup

I have had Maya 2014 running on my computer previously, but had to uninstall it. I just redownloaded the student version but it is not working. Each time I try to boot up the program the output windo opens, then I get a windows error message stating that "Maya application file has stopped working." I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Maya 2014 and even tried installing Maya 2015, yet the problem persists, even across versions. I am not sure what to do from here.

Try resetting Maya to default settings, refer to the Autodesk KB article below.
