Maya 2010/2011 Licensing regarding the Maya API

I am in the process of automating the process of converting our artists' assets to assets that our engine can use.  I am trying to determine whether a Maya license is necessary for the server that will perform the conversion.  Currently the exporter is a plugin that uses the Maya API.  Were I to convert that to a stand alone application that used the Maya API, would I still need a license?
