LMTools Upgrade questions

I would like to upgrade our license servers to the latest version of FlexLM.
I intend to run 2005 for a while before upgrading to 2006 but would like to
upgrade the license server software to 2006 so I don't have to do it again
later. I have successfully upgraded my license files and the server
software to 2005, but I thought the 2006 version would read my 2005 license
files. However, when I use the method of replacing the 4 files as described
in previous posts I get an error that states

[Detecting lmgrd processes...]

Error getting status: No SERVER lines in license file.

License path: C:\Gsi\SAMreport\machind\license\license.dat

FLEXnet Licensing error:-13,66

I have checked the macrovision website and the Users Guide and have found
reference to this error, but it doesn't really tell me what it means or how
to solve it.

Is there something I am missing?

Thanks for the help
Greg

You should be able to uninstall the old ANLM software (retaining your
existing lic file, of course), then install the new and direct it to the
existing license file. You can add your license information for 2006
directly to the existing license file with cut and paste.

Did you do a Force server shutdown and verify that the service was no longer running?
Also make sure that only one pair of use server lines are in the combined license file.

That's what I thought too and I did everything by the book.
I tried my 2004 license file and I tried a 2005 license file.
Shut down the service and replace the 4 files, verified they were the 4 new
files.
restarted the server and reread the license file.
That is why I am baffled and wonder if there is something special with the
2006 version of the FlexLM.

A little more clarification
Make sure the first two line of the license file look like this.
SERVER Myname XXXXXXXXXXXX
USE_SERVER

And make sure this line isn't in the file more than once.

Thanks John,
Yes, I have checked that and it is not in there more that once.
The server line is correct. It is the same license file that works with the
2005 server software.
The only thing that change were the 4 FlemLM server files.

Did you actually uninstall the ANLM software and install the current version
from the 2006 disk? I just wonder if there may be other files/registry
entries that need to be updated besides the four FlexLM files.

Thanks Jenna,
That was the original question I had when I started this process. I want to
use the same server and I don't to have significant downtime. It was
suggested that you could replace the 4 server files with the new ones from
the new disc.
Of course I had to stop the service etc. but if done quickly enough, no
down time. When all of that is done and the license file is re-read,
everything is supposed to work. However it does not work for me with the
2006 version.

So I guess the question still remains if there is something different with
the new version or old license files that cause this process not to work.

I did the overwrite the 4 files trick today at work and there were no problems. I did update the lic file by adding the 2006 licenses in as well.

Have you checked the version of FlexLM is 10.0.1.5. (or whatever it exactly is) in the Help About box? Have you tried copying the old 2005 versions of the files to see if it runs okay in the old version still?

Maybe you could post your whole lic file here.

I did get it to work with the 2005 version of the LM software (9.22) and
that's the way it is running now.
I had hoped to update to 2006 version (10.0.1.5) so I wouldn't have to do it
again when we move to 2006.
I know the license file is OK because it is working in the 2005 version. I
am still concerned that I will have to address this issue when it is time to
move to 2006.

Next time I have chance I am going to get a license file with some 2006 and
try to replace the 4 files again.

I did the uninstall and reinstall after hours, but there was practically no
downtime to speak of. I did not have to reboot the server and the whole
process took maybe 15 minutes. It was very easy and as I recall had prompts
that stepped me through everything, but really kept all my existing settings
from the previous version with little to no effort on my part.

I believe people will be able to work without even noticing that the server
is down, for 10-15 minutes or so... The after hours people could even
borrow a license for a day... There are ways around this!

Go for the after hours approach...borrowing is a good suggestion for anyone
who must work through the 15 minutes it would take you to reinstall. Or
just make them take a 15 minute break. I know it can be a pain sometimes,
but how many people are we talking about. All offices need to have some
maintenance downtime sometimes for IT purposes...there must be a time you
can do this.

Even after hours we always have some people working. It makes it hard to do
the whole uninstall and reinstall process.
I guess if I want it to work then I will have to find a time when no one is
here.

Did you actually uninstall the ANLM software and install the current version
from the 2006 disk? I just wonder if there may be other files/registry
entries that need to be updated besides the four FlexLM files.

"Greg" wrote in message

That's what I thought too and I did everything by the book.
I tried my 2004 license file and I tried a 2005 license file.
Shut down the service and replace the 4 files, verified they were the 4 new
files.
restarted the server and reread the license file.
That is why I am baffled and wonder if there is something special with the
2006 version of the FlexLM.

"Jenna" wrote in message

You should be able to uninstall the old ANLM software (retaining your
existing lic file, of course), then install the new and direct it to the
existing license file. You can add your license information for 2006
directly to the existing license file with cut and paste.

Greg,

Are you sure that your license manager is configured to look at the correct
license file?
>>C:\Gsi\SAMreport\machind\license\license.dat<< looks more like your
>>SAMreport-Lite license. Try reconfiguring your service in LMtools and
>>make sure that you are pointing to the correct license file.

This is the file I already used as a reference when I started this process.
Going back to the original problem, Once the server was upgraded to 10.1.5
from the 2006 disk, it would not read the license file for 2004. The error
indicated that there was no server lines in license file.

Greg,

With regards to your original error, please ensure you check the 'LMTools
ignores license file path environment variable' on the Service/License File
tab. This should get rid of this message. It does not actually affect the
ability to get licenses but it is disconcerting.

Thanks,

Well, that was a good suggestion. I tried again during working hours.
At first it still didn't work. I checked the path to the licennse file on
the config services tab.
It was pathed correctly but I browsed out to the license file anyway to
reread it.
Doing that still did not fix it.

So, I went to t Server/License file tab and selected the Configuration using
License file button.
By doing this it does refrence the GSI_License_file. I browsed to my
license file but still no luck.
By chance I decided to check the box on the first tab that says

LMTOOLS ignores license file path environment

Bammo, one I check that box everything started working.
I hope there are no serious consequences of checking that box.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this resolution.
Newsgoups Rock!!
