It seems that other people got this message about a license error when starting maya 2012:
License was not obtained
Tried Maya 2012 (657D1 2012.0.0.F), error 20
License method:
environment variable MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD='standalone'
Product choice:
environment variable MAYA_LICENSE='unlimited'
License file override:
environment variable MAYA_ALT_EN is not set
the solutions in many threads are referred to win os, but I run maya 2012 in a MacBookPro6,2 with Mac OSX 10.6.8
Thanks in advance for any help,
best
Sergio

Hello Johnny, I tried deleting the environment file and re starting but it has not worked.
Should I uninstall Maya and delete the file, then resinstall Maya ? Is this what your recommending.?
I thought everyone should know this little kernel of information, it's not Autodesk but Windows....I surmize this from the fact that now my Zbrush license is not longer working either and I now have to get a new activation number from Pixologic.
So how nice..
The new activation number would not work with Zbrush, so I am attempting to run chkdsk /f C: on my computer. And see if that helps
Vista of course has that crazy Run As Administrator garbage running.
So I have had to find a work around for that first.
Just like that Apple ad years ago.! With the two men in suits lurking over your shoulders....all to funny.
Well almost...to much time wasted on this.
I've received that message a dozen of times after trying to uninstall and reinstall. It turns out that the maya.env file was missing information.
On a Mac OSX, do the following if you are having the same problem:
-(With the Maya 2014 sp3 downloaded already) In the finder task bar, scroll over the Go tab, press Alt
-Click on Library, open the Preferences folder, Autodesk folder, Maya folder, 2014-x64 folder
-Right click on the maya.env file and choose to open with the text edit application
-This file should be empty, so type in:
MAYA_LICENSE=657F1
MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD=standalone
-Close it and reopen the Maya app. Now it should work!

Dear friends, I am unable to edit this post and must make this comment: please do not email me for help because it has been many years since I've dealt with this issue. In fact, it has been years since I've used Autodesk. Everything I know, I have posted to this forum. Sorry and thanks. I bid you all good luck.
Hi @Anonymous
Firrst of all, thank you for posting the solution for this issue a couple of years ago.

Hi @Anonymous and @joe.mandia!
Sorry to see that you're experiencing errors while trying to use your software. Please see the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Please be sure that you are completely up to date with your Maya service packs and hotfixes
2. Check out this Autodesk Solution to confirm that you have prepared your system for product installation
3. Temporarily disable your firewall, antivirus, and UAC controls
4. Log into your machine as the Administrator
5. Try this Autodesk Solution on Error 20
Please let me know how it goes and if you need further assistance. Please reply with any applicable screenshots or change in behavior. The more detail the better! Thank you!
Hi, I am trying to install Maya on a Mac computer lab at my school. I am using the multiseat standalone option.
It works fine as administrator, worked first time, but now after I created my users (p1-p7) and login to the computer as a regular user account, Maya opens up with the error:
License was not obtained
Tried maya 2015 (657G1 2015.0.0.F), error 41
License method:
environment variable
MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD='standalone'
Product choice:
environment variable
MAYA_LICENSE='unlimited'
License file override: environment variable MAYA_ALT_EN is not set
Please help school starts this week!
