Laptop problem when using a borrowed license...

We have a IBM ThinkPad T60 laptop that when connected to our network, can
borrow a license for AutoCAD 2008 with no problems. When we shut the laptop
down, disconnect from its docking station and bring it up on "battery only,"
AutoCAD 2008 cannot find the borrowed license and we receive the dialog box
to specify the license file.

However, if we connect the laptop to it's AC power supply unit, AutoCAD see
the borrowed license and works fine. Once we are able to get AutoCAD started
in this manner, we can disconnect the power supply unit and work off the
battery. We can even close AutoCAD and start it again and it will see the
borrowed license with no problems. But once we turn the laptop off, we can
no longer use the borrowed license unless the AC power supply cord is
connected or we are connected to the docking station.

Any suggestions?

Dennis

Hi,

Borrow a licence when you are disconnect of the docking station and
connected to the network.
When you borrow an AutoCAD license, it makes a difference between the
network card of the laptop nd the network card of the docking station.
This is not an AutoCAD problem.
It works like this.
you have two network card :
one in the laptop.
another in the docking station.
They have different mac adress.

Hi Franck,

Thank you for reply. But it still doesn't work. Here's what I did:

1. I shut down the laptop and removed the laptop off the docking station.
2. Connected directly to the onboard NIC, started the laptop using the
battery and borrowed a license.
3. Shut down the laptop, removed the network cable.
4. Started the laptop again using battery power.

Results - could not find the borrowed license.

Then, I just plugged in the AC adapter and the laptop found the AutoCAD
license.

I'm sure it's not the MAC address. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Dennis

Some laptops have power-saving modes that disable the NIC under certain
conditions; I wonder if this might be biting you.

In XP:

Start->Run->devmgmt.msc (to open the Device Manager)
Expand Network Adapters
Right-click on your NIC and choose Properties
Open tab called "Power Management"
Uncheck the box that allows the computer to turn off the NIC

I agree with the solution of Jason.
You nertwork card must be disabled.
See also your bios configuration.

Finally I got it!

It appeared to be in the BIOS of the laptop. I'm not sure what it was as I
did not change any settings in the BIOS. All I did was saved the current
settings BIOS settings. Now it works! 🙂

Thanks for everyone's help.

Dennis
