FlexLM & Options file / Save money!

Is there anyone here who wants to save money?
Use the Autodesk FlexLM with a good configured Options file!!!

I have installed AutoCAD 2002 on 70 machines now, but we have 49 network
licenses.
I have figured out how to use the Options file and I'm very happy with it
now.
Our dealer told me that I was the only one in the Netherlands that uses it,
but I can't believe it.

We have users who only need AutoCAD for maybe an hour a day. Now I don't
have to buy an extra AutoCAD license for them.
I've put users in different pools and used the MAX statement to maximize the
nr. of licenses per group.

But keep attention:
I figured out that the Usernames that you type behind the Group name have to
be exactly the same as the network username you specified, it is case
sensitive!
Give the Options file the name with the extension .opt, f.e. adskflex.opt
Put the Options file in the same directory as the license file.

Now I want to install 2 other backup servers, because I don't want the users
to send to home when the server crashes.

Best regards,
Lambiek

Glad that you figured out the options file, but I'd like to warn you about building those additional servers.

I can almost guarantee you that you will have a more stable network with a single server providing acad licenses than you will with
the redundant server model. The redundant server model requires seamless communication between the servers or the whole thing can
die.

With a single server, if you need to boot the adlm, you can and most of the clients will never even notice. If it dies due to a hard
drive failure, power supply, or even mother board problems, as long as the network card is ok you can jerk the network card out,
stick it in another machine, install the FlexLM software and be licensing in 10 minutes. IMO the redundant server model just isn't
worth it (some of the Autodesk network support folks will tell you the same thing).

Jason,

Thanks for the warning!
I'm not sure now if I go on with the backup servers. Maybe Autodesk has to
do a job first to make it work like pdc's and bdc's?

I run with 3 distributed servers, that has worked flavlessly. Not exactly
what you're after but it adds to the security. This way we only loose 1/3 of
the licenses if one server goes down.
Then I've set LM_LICENSE_FILE=@emtnt04;nacnt02;arnnt02 on the PC's.

Lambiek,

I have been fighting with the flexLM options file too. I think my error is in the format I am using. My options file looks something like this:

# This line creates the log file
REPORTLOG +C:\flexlm\report.log
# This line defines the Group "LANDUSER", add or remove login names here.
GROUP LANDUSER user1,user2,user3,user4,user5
# This line will reserve licenses for the group "LANDUSER"
RESERVE 5 40200ACDLAND_5_0F GROUP LANDUSER

According to the flexLM tool, I have 10 available licenses using this options file. I have been trying different methods of separating the user names with no luck. Could you share with me an example of your options file?

Thanks,

Elliott

The Report Log line looks fine...
The Reserve Line looks fine...

We need to work on your Group line

The syntax for a group statement is a follows

GROUP group_name user_list (Which you have figured out). The line that you have however is creating a group called LANDUSER that has
a single member called user1,user2,user3,user4,user5. Use a space to separate user names. To verify the username that flex is seeing
for the users have the user launch a session of LDD and then do a lmstat to figure out what the Flex service is calling the users
(it will be reported by the lmstat).
The group line should look like this
GROUP LANDUSER user1 user2 user3 user4 user5

Jason,

Thanks for the help. The problem wound up being a number was typed in wrong. I did also change the cammas to spaces. This was the original format, but it was giving me trouble, which started the whole experiment.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Elliot,

As Jason said: use a space instead of a comma to separate the
usernames and be aware of the case sensitivity of the names you specify
!

As I said: I use the following lines to save
money:

GROUP construction User1 User2 User3 User4 User5 User6 User7
User8

MAX 6 41100ACD_2002_0F GROUP
construction

As you see AutoCAD 2002 is installed on 8 machines at the
construction dept., but only 6 machines can start AutoCAD.

MAX num_lic
feature
[:keyword=value]
type
{list |
group_name}

Limits usage for a particular user or group.

If the 7th will start AutoCAD he has to ask one the
others to shutdown AutoCAD.

Best regards

Lambiek

We us eoption file also in the netherlands, and it's really useful.

Other question. Can i backup my entire harddisk (with Norton ghost) and
replace it when the system crashes ?? or is the HD serialnumber important.
Also the network card ID is important as far as i know. If the network card
doesn't respond we also have a major problem.

Yes, you can ghost the system if you want to, but there really isn't any need...

As long as you have the ethernet card out of the original machine (and the license file) all it takes is about 5 minutes to install
the FlexLM Adlm software and you can be back up and running. HD serial number, processor id, ip address, phase of the moon isn't
important like it was with the Elan Adlm. The only thing that the license file needs to work correctly is a network card with the
same Ethernet address.
