Exporting Maya files to STL format

I am currently working with a Student/Education version of Maya 2012 on a Windows 7 system.  I loaded the plug-ins for Direct Connect and attempted to export a Maya ".mb" file as a ".stl" file.  However, when I go to open the exported file I realize no data has converted with the file.  Can anyone inform me if there are issues translating Maya files to an STL format?
