Client can't get AutoCAD after offline attempt to run

I have a user who took his laptop offline without going through the license borrow process, then attempted to run. Of course, it asked him to supply a server name and he had no idea what to give it. The next time he was back online, he attempted to run AutoCAD (2008, BTW) and after brief disk activity, nothing happens. I think this is the second time we went through this for him. The only way I found to correct it was to reinstall AutoCAD on his laptop.
I thought maybe in the failure to specify a server when the client attempted to run offline, that the LM_LICENSE_FILE variable had been blown away, but I created that and it didn't fix the problenm. Any ideas on what happened and a cheap fix?

One idea is that you can hardcode the
LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable in the control panel -> system settings.
No application can easily modify those settings so it certainly shouldn't
disapear that mysteriously.

You should also consider the ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE variable and the FLEXLM_TIMEOUT variable.
