Can't install 3ds Max on D:\

Hi folks,

By design, I have a very small boot volume (only 40G) and all my apps and data are installed on D:.

I am very disappointed to find that I cannot install 3ds Max to D:\. I can install one of the addons on D but not the 2 gig of the basic app. This seems to be a very odd omission in this day and age. Please submit this to the powers that be as an improvement for the next patch.

Sincerely,

Sean

You may be missing your configuration part during the install.
Before begin Installation you can click on configure and there you can define the install location.
Screen shot attached.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Hi Anil,

I uninstalled today and went to reinstall and indeed, there is no place to specify the folder. What I see is a little different to your screenshots.

The file I downloaded is Autodesk_3ds_Max_2011_English_Win_32-64bit.part1.exe

I unpacked that using 7zip and I ran the setup.exe inside. I cannot run the exe directly because there is a corrupt component file inside as detailed in my other thread in this forum.

I have attached screens of what I'm seeing. Only the Backburner tab gives me the option to change the install path.

You should just be able to click the Next button and go to screen 2 of 5.  That is where you change the drive letter.  Also, you don't need to extract the .exe with 7z as the file is self extracting.

In my download, a single file is corrupt and causing the self-extract to abort (I've another support thread open for this). It's a file for one of the addons so I'd not expect it to cause an issue with the installation of the main product.

I had expected the option to select the install folder as you describe but in the subsequent windows, there is no feature. Attached are another two screens showing the subsequent pages. If I leave it set to "typical" there are no options at all other than clicking Next.

I'm re-downloading the 3GB file without using the accelerator but I do not anticipate any changes in my experience.

Do you see the next button in the lower right hand corner?  Make sure you are on the first tab for 3DS Max and then click Next to go from Page 1 (stand-alone or network) to Page 2.  On Page 2, you select the drive you wish to install the product.  It will look just like the screen capture provided by Autodesk above.

Your screen cap:

Will look like the Autodesk screen cap when you click Next to go to Page 2:

I could've sworn that I'd tried that before but I must have overlooked it. Thank you.

Now to solve the corrupt installer issue (separate thread).

You'd be surprised just how common it is to overlook that.  Glad to help.

Ah, poor wizard design then. Should move it to the first frame!

Hello all. I also had that trouble and i found the way to resolve that. Remove all autodesk components such as backburner, FBX plugin like stuffs and re run the setup. Now you can choose a destination folder to install...

Good Luck 4 all !
