CAD Overlay

I had a discussion with my reseller about CAD overlay in which I was
informed that I could add one license of COV as a feature in my license
file, so that one person, out of the 8 of us could be using it, along with
the 8 ADT licenses. That seemed to suit our needs, so we purchased that one
license, and now AutoDesk is saying that that is not an option.

Has anyone had experience with COV as a feature in ADLM? Who is giving me
bad information, my reseller, or the poor schmuck that AutoDesk stuck at
phone for authorization codes?

Is there a netsetup folder??? If so then I'd say that it's supported. The folks in the
cadoverlay ng seem to be having some trouble with some of the network installs, but more
than one of them have indicated that they have an auth code for overlay. Call the # for
auth codes again, if the rep can't help you ask for a supervisor. If that doesn't work
have your dealer call them and let them argue about it.

Your reseller has steared you the wrong way. Even though CAD overlay has a
netsetup folder on the CD, I have found that the setup there does the same
thing as the regular setup. To my knowledge and understanding, much to my
shagrin, there is no network licensing of the COV product.

There is a netsetup, in the installation guide talks about network
deployment. So I think that the guy at autodesk was giving me bad info.
But my reseller called their contacts, and got the same story I got. I
don't know why I diodn't think of the overlay NG, I'll have to see what I
can dig up in there. Thanks.

The netsetup allowed me to create a deployment location, just like I would
have expected. It did not ask for the ADLM location, but did ask for the
exact path for hte AutoCAD location. WHichh makes sense. But if I start
it, it failes saying that it could not find a license.

It's acting like it should be doable as a feature in ADLM. And, as Jasom
Martin observed, the folks inthe COV NG discuss netwrk deployment, although
not extensively.

Hi,

the CAD Overlay CD has a netsetup folder. The setup there builds the
deployment. There is no license manager installation, which is easy to
understand as COVL will only work with AutoCAD anyway! If it's CAD Overlay
2000 or 2000i, use the Elan AdLM and ask for an authorization code using the
servercode found in the AutoCAD's running AdLM-service. You can add the COVL
authorization to the same server that deals out AutoCAD licenses. If you
have AutoCAD 2002 and COVL 2002, ask for a license file for CAD Overlay
using the same hostname and ethernet address you used for AutoCAD. Then
append the new information to the license file like this:
SERVER server1 00aa22bb33cc
USE_SERVER
VENDOR adskflex port=2080
INCREMENT 41100ACD_2002_0F adskflex 1.000 permanent 2 \
VENDOR_STRING=nfr:permanent SUPERSEDE DUP_GROUP=H \
ISSUED=30-jul-2001 ck=199 SN=700-12345678 SIGN=1234CC34VV
INCREMENT 40700CADOV_2002_0F adskflex 1.000 permanent 2 \
VENDOR_STRING=nfr:permanent SUPERSEDE DUP_GROUP=H \
ISSUED=30-jul-2001 ck=170 SN=700-87654322 SIGN=C45SE123DR6Y

You have to install the CAD Overlay in both cases using the deployment,
otherwise CAD Overlay won't know to look for the NW license!

Thank you all.

After many phone calls, it turns out that the issue was the serial number.
LAthough my reseller knew what I was planning to do, something got crossed
up along the way, and the serial number that was shipped was for a stand
alone seat.

The guy at Adesk gave a somewhat confusing representation of the issue. The
problem is not that Overlay won't do what I want, the problem is that Adesks
authorization program will not issue the codes for what I want to do based
on that serial number.

Conveniently, all I need is a new serial number and CD key, and all will be
well. I can actiually use the same media.

So, it turns out all I had to do was call Autodesk back, and speak to a
different authorization guy. THe problem was not tha the program won't do
what I want, nor is it that I had the wrong serial number, the problem is
solely, and simply that hte guy I spoke to the first time had no idea what
he was talking about.

You know, I can accept that the authorization staff has no technical
training. I don't call thenm to resolve techinical issues anyway. But I
have trouble accepting hte apparent fact that some of them have not been
adequately trained for the jobs that are their responsibility. For what we
pay for Autodesks softwre, I should not have to call more than once to get
an authorization code - it's way too much like some twisted game of bingo.
