AutoCAD structural detailing 2011 Error 1721

I can install AutoCAD structural detailing 2011 64bit on Windows 7 64bit with no problems. I can run it just fine as the user I installed it as. However if I try to run it as any other user (normal user, admin user, domain admin user) it fails. At first I installed it as the local admin, however after running into the below error I decided to uninstall and re-install as domain admin; I end up with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas? This is on a Dell Optiplex 980 with a Hyper Threaded Quad Core Core i7 processor, 8GB of ram, ATI Radeon HD 4550, 1TB HDD. I need to get this running for two computer labs that will be used in one week to teach an 11 week course Smiley Surprised

This looks like a bad install image. You may need to re-download or re-extract the installer form the WinRAR archive. If from a DVD try copying the contents of the disks in order from disk one into the same folder on the hard drive. Choose to overwrite if asked. Then double click the setup.exe on the hard drive to start the installer.

I did did a fresh download of the installer from the Autodesk site as you suggested. I extracted it and installed it with no problems. I was able to run it just fine as the user I installed it as. I left this PC off of the domain (to eliminate any GPO issues) and added a local limited user account. I logged in and ran AutoCAD structural detailing 2011 and it went through the setup process. I did not get the 1721 error, however it began trying to register a lot of .dll's and could not (I assume because it's a limited user account). Any ideas? Do these .dll's need to be registered by each user into their ntuser.dat registry hive or do they get registered in the system hive? Is there a way to register them manually for all users?

AutoCAD and AutoCAD verticals have two installers. The first installs the application to the Computer and sets up the installing user. The second is run when an additional user uses the application for the first time. The role of the secondary installer is to configure three user resources:

     Windows XP:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk

          C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Autodesk

          C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk

     Windows 7 and Vista:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk

          C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk

          C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Autodesk

The additional user does not need to have elevated permissions but the user should have access to their own Windows Profile. Additional restrictions may cause problems.

Additionally Windows may detect problems and the installer may heal AutoCAD or another application. I have seen it try to resolve conflicting .dll files or file versions a Windows and Office update has resolved the cases of this I have seen as the .dll files common to the applications having this conflict had .dll’s from Microsoft in common.

Edit- Added the Windows 7 and Vista HKCU location.

Hi,

I have the same issue as mentioed in first post, where ACD-SD-2011x64 refuses to create autocad profile for Doamin User windows profiles on Win7 Enterprise x64.

The issue only occurs under Domain Users and not under Doamin Admin win profiles. Even after resetting AutoCAD profile as described by Douglas, I start ACD-SD and fails during pofile setup and throws the error.

autocad error 1721. there is a problem with this windows installer package

Any suggestions would be much appreaciated, as working with ACD-SD autodesk package has become extremly furstrating.

Kind Regards,

Vas

The Installer process that sets up the user resources is unable to complete because of restrictions on the user. You will need to temporarily remove the Group Policies or settings that apply these or temporarily elevate the user to an administrator for the first use. For reference you can review this Technical Solution.

If this is the case, how is it that the below list of installed Autodesk products work just fine as a restricted user? Also I've given the everyone group modify (and finally Full Control) access to the Autodesk program file directories. I rebuilt the PC from the ground up with a fresh clean install of Windows 7 64bit with only drivers and Windows updates installed. I think installed Structural Detailing 2011. This PC is not joined to our domain and therefor isn't picking up any of our student-lock-down GPO's. Even local normal users have the same issue. It is quite inconvenient that users must have admin privileges to run the software the first time. We have 4 labs of 20 PCs and several hundred students coming and going; to make each user an admin for their first log-on would be quite a headache indeed The only application that is having issues is AutoCAD Structural Detailing 2011 and it worked fine when I installed it on XP the previous quarter; this seems to be an issue with the program and possibly Windows 7.

Hello all,

I decided to rebuild the box yet again and start from scratch. I installed Windows 7 64bit via clean install and ran Windows updates. I then installed structural detailing 2011, however this time I chose to NOT install the service pack as part of the installation. Upon completion I logged of as the Domain admin user and logged on as a limited test student account. I ran structural detailing 2011 and to my surprise it WORKED! I tried it with other limited accounts too and setup went through without a problem each time. I then decided to try to install the service pack manually. I installed it and restarted the PC, I then logged in as a test user (who's local profile I deleted so I could start of fresh with them) and ran structural detailing 2011. I was shocked to see the ol' familiar Error 1721 rearing its ugly head. The only conclusion I can come up with is that something with the service pack for structural detailing 2011 is causing this.

vampelas can you give this a try and confirm if this works for you as well?

The AutoCAD Structural Detailing 2011 Update 2 resolves this 1721 error for additional users. The Update can be downloaded here.
