Activation of Previous Versions

So our office uses Civil 3d 2008... We had a couple of copies of Civil 3d 2009 laying around that I put on a home computer. I was just informed that once I activated the 2009 vesion we would be unable to activate the copies of 2008 anymore. Is this true? If so what can be done?

If 2009 is a direct upgrade for your 2008 version, then that is correct.
But if you purchased 2009 at full price, then 2008 will not be affected.
But.... Since there is no difference between 2008 and 2009 except for a few added features, I'm not sure why it even matters. It's the same exact DWG format plus look plus performance.

So it looks as if it was an upgrade from 2008 however how is that going to
affect the remaining 9 licenses of 2008 that we have? The office drafters
are comfortable with 2008, the learning curve has been a little to much for
them to transition to 2009. I was loading it to start working and learning
with 2009 so we could possibly switch over with that said however I had no
idea that installation could possibly lock out the remaining licenses for
2008. I have no problem uninstalling and returning the license for the
civil3d 2009 just as long as the licenses for 2008 remain good.

Go ask in the Civil Forum: I can't imagine there is so much different between 2008 and 2009 as to cripple anyone. In fact I'll buy you a beer if it is so 'different' 🙂

Dean,

There are specific problems with Civil 3D. However. They only come in to play if you're trying to have some work in 2009 and some in 2008. The Civil 3D objects won't be compatible from '09 to '08. But if all upgrade to 2009 there shouldn't be any problem.

It's bee a long time since I went from C3D 2009 to 2009. I don't remember any huge differences except 2009 was more stable and had a few more features. Anyone who can work in 2008 should be able to follow the same procedures to produce a design in 2009. A few menu options may have change a little.

The OP's problem is why I stay on Subscription. I can automatically run the current and 3 past versions and with a little begging and pleading I can run any version we've ever had a license for.

I think the only thing you could do is to get a hold of your reseller and see if they can get Autodesk to agree to downgrade those licenses.

There are a couple of thing I'm not sure about. You said you had "a couple of copies of Civil 3d 2009 laying around". Does that mean you had less than the total number of licenses on 2008?

If that's so then "loading it to start working and learning with 2009 so we could possibly switch over" doesn't work. You can't buy any more licenses of 2009, only 2014 on Subscription with would allow you to run 2011.

I had to run out of the office and didn't get to finish my last post.

If you only bought 2 licenses of 2009 then you should be able to re-authorize the remaining 7 licenses of 2008. If 3 then it leaves you 6.

Really, between 2009 and 2008 with no DWG format change between the two? Interesting and good to know Sir.

Yes. The first version of Civil 3D that offered reverse compatibility for even one version is 2014. That offers some Object compatibility with 2013. But not everything. This is because of the Civil 3D object creation. Each version has had it's own version of the Objects until now.

What's this Sir business? We met in San Fransisco last year. Or are you only being super polite today?

The changes which stick out in my mind, would be from the core AutoCAD: the Ribbon replacing the Dashboard and some memory leak issues which were at least partially adressed with SPs.

Just acknowledging a more knowledgeable C3D specific response: Sir is a term of endearment here in Texas 🙂
