3ds Max 2015 with student license error 1603

So, 3ds Max 2015 installation will not work, it always throws a 1603.

I have Windows 7 64-bit

I tried

Turning off UAC

Turning of antivir

checking if NFTS short name creation was allowed

Not installing with service pack

emptying temp folder

checking folder priviliges

None of these fixed it.

I also tried uninstalling service pack for windows 7, because I used to have problems with some vcredist packages, but it hasn't been an issue, and that didn't fix it. I'm all out of options, and would appriciate any tips, or anything.

As is apparent from my main post, I tried all of these. It didn't work. The problem still persists

Hi Alex,

To help me isolate the cause of the install failure, can you attach a copy of your detialed install log file? The logs will be generated in the TEMP directory which can be accessed by typing '%temp%' in the START > RUN. Please locate the logs which will have a naming convention of "Product Name Install.log" , where  "Product name" is the name and release year of the software. The 3DS max install logs can get rather large so you may need to zip the file first.

Yes, it's already attached to the main post.

Well, apparently it wasn't, and I wasn't able to edit my earlier post in time. But here it is, packed in a .rar.

The log shows CustomAction MRSetService returned actual error code 1603

This means the mentalray satellite service cannot be created for some reason. One known cause of this error is a missing "Services" file from C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. If that file is missing it can be recovered with a windows OS repair or by simply copying it over from a system that still has the file. If that file isn't missing it's hard to say why it would be failing. If you aren't going to use mental ray for rendering you may want to just try taking that out of the installer. Here's some steps to follow

1.) Download and install orca msi editing tool http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor

2.) Copy the install media for 3ds max to a local drive or navigate to the downloaded installer directory. Find the install msi for 3ds Max, usually  x64/max/3dsmax.msi

3.) Right click the msi and choose edit in orca

4.) In "Custom Actions" Search for the line MRSetService and delete it. Close Orca and save the changes.

5.) Run the 3ds Max install again.

If this is the only spot the install is getting struck in it should complete.

Thank you! That helped me fix it.

I fixed the problem by giving my account (which is admin) the ownership of that file temporarily. After that, the installation went fine! It's weird how running the setup as admin didn't get past this...

The default permission for that file should allow administrators or edit it but it's possible it had it's permissions corrupted or was locked for editing by some other process. Either way I am glad you were able to move past it.  Cheers!

Hello @bhuvna14 and welcome to the community!

Typically you need to look through the installation log to find the culprit for a 1603 error. I've provided some reference links for your convenience.

Error 1603 during installation of Autodesk software

Location of the log files generated by the installation of an Autodesk product

If you're in the need of some quick conversion assistance, try posting the file / request in the 3ds Max forum.
