3ds Max 2013 32-bit Installation Fails and Errors - No Solutions Working

Hi there,

I'm trying to install the 3ds Max 2013 student edition on a Windows 7 32-bit computer and am getting installation errors over and over and 3ds Max 2013 fails to install each time.

I am installing as an Administrator and have manually downloaded the file from the Autodesk website.

I have tried multiple solutions based on Travis Nave's posts on Autodesk such as this one:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Installation-Licensing/Can-t-install-3ds-max-2014-or-2013-w-error-mess...

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Installation-Licensing/3ds-Max-Design-2013-Insatallatioan-Fails/td-p/3...

I have also tried manually editing the setup configuration settings file removing the pre-requisites as per Travis' "advanced solution" found here:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Installation-Licensing/Some-Products-Fail-to-Install-Result-1603/td-p/...

I have tried removing the C++ pre-requisite i.e. VCREDIST2005SP1ATLX86

the dot.net pre-requisite i.e. DOTNET4

and even the directx pre-requisite i.e. DIRECTX

removing all of the pre-requsities all at once and trying removing the lines one at a time, and followed the rest of Travis' "advanced solution" instructions and still the same result, 3ds Max 2013 fails to install.

In the setup config file, I also tried adding the "IGNORE_FAILURE=YES" and IGNORE_ERROR=YES lines after different sections, though it had the same effect. 3ds Max 2013 fails to install.

I removed the C++ 2005, 2008, and 2010 from the Control Panel and re-installed them with the 3ds Max 2013 installer.

I removed the Autodesk entries in the registry. I deleted the temp files in the windows temp folder.

It's always the same result. 3ds Max 2013 fails to install each time.

I'm using 3ds Max 2013 because I have a 32-bit computer.

Hopefully these installation issues have been resolved with 3ds Max 2015, but still, I would like to get 3ds Max 2013 to install properly and would appreciate it if I and anyone else having these challenges could get this resolved. So far, the various solutions I've read on the Autodesk are not working.

Thanks.

Post your installation log.  Perhaps it is due to another problem rather than the usual 1603 error solutions that I have posted.

Any response or help on this situation?

It's been about a week July 29th, since there was any response from Autodesk (Travis) and I have posted the installation log since then.

Is anyone going to help out with this situation?

If 3ds Max 2013 32-bit student version cannot be installed please say so.

Looks like the install is failing at 3ds max itself so we will need to see the install.log from that one in order to determine where in the install process it failed. Typically this log is called something like 3dsMaxInstall64.log or 3dsMaxInstall86.log. This log file can be fairly large so you may need to zip it first before uploading it.

Attached is the MaxInstall32.zip file (I renamed it to MaxInstall32_8_4_2014 to signify today's date 8-4-14) and it contains the MaxInstall32.log.

Today is 8-4-14. I hope it doesnt take a week to look at this MaxInstall32.log and respond in a week like it did for the above setup log. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. I just saw your thread for the first time yesterday. The log shows CustomAction MRSetService returned actual error code 1603.

This means the mentalray satellite service cannot be created for some reason. One known cause of this error is a missing "Services" file from C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. If that file is missing it can be recovered with a windows OS repair or by simply copying it over from a system that still has the file. If that file isn't missing it's hard to say why it would be failing. If you aren't going to use mental ray for rendering you may want to just try taking that out of the installer. Here's some steps to follow

1.) Download and install orca msi editing tool http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor

2.) Copy the install media for 3ds max to a local drive or navigate to the downloaded installer directory. Find the install msi for 3ds Max, usually  x64/max/3dsmax.msi

3.) Right click the msi and choose edit in orca

4.) In "Custom Actions" Search for the line MRSetService and delete it. Close Orca and save the changes.

5.) Run the 3ds Max install again.

If this is the only spot the install is getting struck in it should complete.

I have a services file inside of C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

I also have a services.msc file inside of C:\Windows\System32

And also have a services (Services and Controller app) file inside of C:\Windows\System32

It doesn’t make sense not to use Mental Ray because it’s free and a good renderer. Without Mental Ray I would be limited to the scanline renderer which comes with 3ds Max.

Is there a way to manually install Mental Ray outside of the 3ds Max installation?

Thanks.

Mental ray is also included with other products like Maya but if it fails to create the service in one install than it's likely to fail on any of them. I am not aware of any other know issues that prevent that Mental ray service from created but I imagen Permissions/Security software may be involved, the the account cannot create the service, modify the services file, of if files needed for the install are blocked by anvirus software or something that could affect the install. You might try the install again from a local admin account with antivirus, UAC and any antimalware software disabled.

I have Maya 2013 32-bit student edition also running on the same pc. No installation problems and Mental Ray runs fine on Maya 2013.

You mentioned to run the installation from a "local admin account." How is that different than running the installation as a administrator, which I did with both Maya and Max?

There shoudn't really be a difference. As I mentioned I am not sure what else might cause the mrsetservice action to fail. As far as I know that process writes files into the install folder, Creates a new service on the system (mental ray satelite service) and updates the services file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc addid a couple lines to the bottom. Typically only a lack of permission or a a services file being missing would cause any problems with this.

I had the same problem. Just go to C / Autodesk and run the setup as admistrador.

I am an administrator and have run the setup multiple times as an administrator and also elevated administrator. Read the previous posts, especially my first post.
