3DS Max 2010 won't open

I am on WindowsXP 32bit machine. 3DS Max 2010 stand-alone. Graphics card is ATI Radeon 2400 HD Pro with Catalyst version 11.6

recently my 3DS Max 2010 started having an issue...it will not open. When I open it I see the Splash screen and it stay on "initializing 3ds max"...

In the processes I see 3DS Max and LMU.exe (license mange utility?)...I have to close both to try again and still nothing. Previously 3DS Max worked fine on my machine. There are no logs in the adlm folder. No event errors in event viewer...nothing...it is like a completly silent FAIL!

Things I have tried:

- disabled symantec endpoint protection

- deleted autodesk files from Flexnet 'all users' folder

- installed all availble updates for 2010

- deleted 3ds max preference ini file

- clean removal and reinstall of 3DS max

- removal and reinstall of .net 3.5 sp1 framework

None of the above has solved the issue. This is my work machine and certain things such as security updates and firewall are out of my control...however I was able to run 3DS max previously. My IT department claims nothing new that would affect it has been added...any help would be appreciated.

Hi Daniel:

Can you try this procedure and let me know if this helps?

  • Go to the Start menu in Windows
  • Start > Program Files > Autodesk > Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 >
         Change Graphics Mode
  • Select “revert from Direct3d”
  • Select OpenGL or Software Display (32 bit only)

Thanks for the information, Daniel.  Have you by chance attempted to update (or roll back) your video drivers?  Hangs like the one you are seeing can sometimes be attributed to video driver-related issues.

I usually keep it updated with the latest version...I did update it recently

OK, did you update the driver prior to the issue appearing or as an attempted resolution?  If possible, you may want to roll the driver back to a previous version.  I'm assuming you keep your Windows installation up to date, but just to check, you may want to run a Windows update to ensure you have all the latest patches/Service Packs for your XP installation.  Do you see any failures or errors when in your System or Application Logs?

No errors in the system log or event log. It's hard to say when I updated the driver versus Max not working as some projects I work on don't require Max as much as others...and I haven't used it in a few months. I have upgraded the drivers since I last used it....but not to solve any issues.

Message 10 of 46

I will look into rolling back the driver to a previous version. I wish I remember what my previous version was as there were a few updates in between. I'll keep you posted. thank you.

Message 11 of 46

Ok...I did a clean uninstall of my graphics drivers and reinstalled the previous version that I know 3DS Max was working on...however, this did not solve the issue...

You may be able to find a root cause by running Process Monitor.  You can find it here:

I'll give it a try...

A few things stood out...

3dsmax.exe UnlockFileSingle C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\ui\DefaultUI.clr RANGE NOT LOCKED

LMU.exe RegQueryValue HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{C2A15949-4CD1-423E-BC91-BBD6F8970767}\IPAutoconfigurationEnabled NAME NOT FOUND

Hi Daniel:

Are you using a network or standalone license for the product?  If network, the registry entry related to LMU.exe may be helpful to your IT department.

Another thing to try if you are able.  Can you create a new local administrator account as a test and attempt to launch the product?  There could be issues with your Windows Profile.

using standalone.

I am unable to create user accounts.

Hello Daniel:

Unfortunate, but if you could get someone from your IT group to attempt to log in and launch the product, we could at least rule out a corrupt user profile.

Hi Daniel:

Have you attempted launching from Diagnostic Mode?  Here's how if you'd like to give it a go:
