3D Studio Max 2012 "the application was unable to start correctly 0xc000007b"

I get this error message when starting 3D Studio Max 2012 64bit.

The 32bit version works fine.

I have searched the internet for a solution and seen suggestions to re-install the latest display driver (seems to be the official Autodesk response), run as an administrator, remove and re-install 3D Studio Max and also to install the Direct X SDK.

I have tried all these solutions and none have worked.
