Softimage 2014 is crashing on startup

Hi all,

i installed softimage on our system which runs ubuntu 12.04 (i know its not supported but maybe someone knows a reason for our error). The installation runs fine but the startup of softimage crashes with the following output:

./xsi
/usr/autodesk/softimage/Softimage_2014/Application/bin/XSI.bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXext.so.6: undefined symbol: _XGetRequest

It seems that my version of the libXext got some additional function:

_XGetRequest

which the patched softimage version dont have?

Is there any known issue of using the prebuild libXext library which comes with ubuntu 12.04? Its compiled againt libX11.

Or can i relink the system lib with the lib that shipped with softimage anyway?

Just for those that are also trying to get it run on ubuntu, here is what i had to do...

To avoid the _XGetRequest Error you have two options.

1: Rename the libX11 so that softimage uses your desktop default:

/Softimage_2014/Application/mainwin/mw/lib-amd64_linux/X11/libX11.so.6.3.0
/Softimage_2014/Application/mainwin/mw/lib-amd64_linux/X11/~libX11.so.6.3.0.old

2. Get the necessary X11 folder libs from a Fedora/RedHat installation and copy it to your softimage X11 folder on ubuntu.

To avoid segmentation faults tell softimage where your nvidia libs are:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/your/nvidialibs/

Maybe you want to add that to your softimage launcher right before the execution of softimage.

After that Softimage should fire up.

You should force softimage to use your desktop windows manager

gedit Softimage_2014/.xsi_2014

 and add the following line near to the end

setenv MWWM

[thebarx]

What happens if my laptop has no Nvidia Card, but I want to run Softimage anyway? (that's discrimination)

Can I just install nvidia libs just to make XSI appreciate my laptop?

Is XSI doing apartheid witn video cards?
