Recreating a Coverage Area to allow 2D line draping

1. Export the Coverage Area as an IMX.

a. Settings and Utilities> Export IMX

b. Ensure you write down the Target Coordinate System on export [or set your own]:

c. Select the area around your Coverage Area, rather than the entire model.

2. Open Civil 3D, set the Coordinate System using MAPCSASSIGN and match the output of the IMX.

3. Import the IMX to Civil 3D: you will see the coverage area [among other C3D objects]:

4. Create a SHP file of the Coverage Area.

a. For details on creating and importing SHP files, see this Infratip under 'When configuring Coverage Areas'

Notes:

  • If objects don't appear after processing, and a refresh [F5], check the project layers, and move linework 'layer' above the surface 'layer.'
  • If you already have the Coverage Area defined in Civil 3D, you can skip the export steps, and follow the steps outlined in the linked article for importing as a Coverage Area.

Finished Results: Coverage Area recreated in Civil 3D, and stripes draping on top of Coverage:
