SDF Conversion

Dear All,
It appears that SDF converter in many AutoDesk products doesn't work well to say the least especially if your writing out attribute information from a linked data source. AutoDesk is unable to achieve this functionality and your better off switching software vendors. One would think this would be easy seeing that both file types are proprietary AutoDesk formats. I've spoken with AutoDesk people and they are aware of the problems but are unable to offer any solutions. It's unbelievable.

What's the actual problem?  I'm
curious.

We have a parcel dwg linked to an acces database through a template. The database stores the attribute info. This works well enough. You can select a parcel and hightlight the link in the database....conversely you can select a record in the database and zoom to the parcel. We've been attempting to convert the dwg to sdf and write ID field stored in the database to the KEY field in the sdf. We've tried using Map and Land Desktop but it either crashes without returning an error or only writes half of the parcels the fails.

Does it bomb using the SDF Loader as
well?

We can export just the line work to sdf using both the sdf loader and the function within the Map and/or Land development. We don't want to install the sdf loader on the cadd workstation, though. This functionality is supposed to be embedded in the software. Were using Access 2000 and Windows 2000 with both Service Pack 2 and 3. Just to see if it works I'll try the sdf loader with the /LINK switch.

Scott's suggestion to use the SDF Loader is
good.  Especially since it is much faster that using Map or
LDD.

I run in a similar environment to you and the only
problem that I have is enough RAM.  The Export to MapGuide will continue to
consume RAM until it finishes all parcels.  If you have a large drawing and
exceed the amount of physical RAM, this can take a long time.  Once the
command is finished, Map releases the RAM and you can start again.

You could also break up the drawing and append one
parcel section to another.  This will help prevent exceeding your RAM and
you can check if the process will complete without crashing.

Good Luck

I've experienced problems with this process being
slow as well.  One thing I've done to speed it up, is to populate an Object
Data table with the Parcel ID's.  This can be done using the Generate Links
command to an empty Object Data table.  This is assuming that you have
internal text or blocks for your Parcel ID's.  If not, then you can use the
Alter Properties option of a query to graphically populate them in your drawing
from your SQL data.

Now, when you export to SDF, you are assigning the
key from the Object Data table rather than your link templates and it is MUCH
faster.  Give it a try and see how you like it.  Hopefully, Autodesk
will work out some of these issues, most of which are likely due to limitations
with Microsoft data drivers.
