MapGuide Studio Importing MapInfo Files

I am currently using MapGuide to build an interactive demographic mapping and reporting engine but I am have a few issues. We primarily use mapinfo so all our base data is in TAB format. I translated all the data to SHP files. When I try to bring in our BlockGroups layer (205,000 Polygons with data about 1.5gb) MapGuide studio locks up on me. It also happens when I try to bring in the major roads for all the US.

Next another issue with projection. All of our projections are Lat/Lon Nad 83 degrees. MapInfo gives you an option to display the data in Sq Miles. Is there anyway to do that in MapGuide Studio. Thanks for hearing me out.
