displaying dwg data

Hello,

I am having some difficulty displaying DWG data on my map, and I was
wondering if you folks in here could point me in the right direction. I was
able to bring the data over successfully, but I am having trouble stylizing
it. The data is a bunch of blocks with attributes. When I bring it over
into mapguide, it seems that I can stylize the points using the original
block definitions, but there seems to be two problems: first, the blocks get
defined in the mapguide symbol library with placeholders for the attributes.
Is there a way to display the original attribute value in this location or
turn off the placeholders? The dialog in Studio implies that this is
possible by offering a "Text Color" setting in the Point Style definition,
but it doesn't seem to do anything. I have tried using a Feature Label, but
the best I can do is place a label NEXT to the symbol, rather than in the
place of an attribute. The second problem is that there doesn't seem to be
a way to change the justification of the feature label. How is this done?
Is it possible to make "fancy" labels, where text appears inside of a
symbol. Thanks for any suggestions that you can offer.

Hi Jon,

if for example you are trying to create Highway signs with the highway number inside it I don't believe it is currently possible to do this dynamically in one layer. I'm a little surprised changing the text color doesn't work. Also, since labels around points are placed dynamically around the boundary of the symbol you can't get them to overlay so labels won't work either. If you were really tricky and found a symbol that was transparent you might be able to use 2 layers where the bottom is the symbol and the top is text that uses the attribute value you need. It might be hard getting the sizing correct but they should position ok with a little fiddling with the reference point for the image.

Could you attach a sample DWG with the blocks you are having issues with?

Dave

Basically, I am trying to do something similar to the highway sign that you
described. I have attached a sample showing two such blocks.

Hey Jon,

could you attach the feature classification xml file: ...\Dwg\Housing\Housing.xml

so that I can import the DWG into MapGuide to experiment with it?

Thanks,
Dave

This was a really basic classification (attached) - basically, I am just
classifying everything in a single feature class & exposing all properties.

Thanks Jon. I'm not a Map user per say so I don't have a lot of experience with DWG's.

It looks like a design flaw to me that the place holders for the tags are being picked up and made part of the symbol rather than interpreted as text place holders. I'm guessing that's why changing the text color won't make them disappear.

Of course even if this did work, you still wouldn't have the tag attributes from the sybmols appearing anywhere. It's also possible to build blocks from other blocks (nested blocks). This poses some challenges when attempting to convert them and determine what to do with the attributes.

I think some enhancements will be required to better support blocks in the future.

That would be great, Dave. Thanks! Let me know if you want to discuss this
offline in greater detail.
