Orbit and set pivot point using only mouse button combinations

Orbit and set pivot point using only mouse button combinations

The ability to set pivot points and orbit a model directly from the use of mouse button combinations, without having to select the Orbit icon or use the View Cube (which itself is a nice feature) would be very useful. Complete model viewing manipulation (zoom, pan, rotate/orbit, set pivot point) using only combinations of mouse buttons, is very common in other CAD Systems and even some viewing applications (e.g. 3D PDF in Adobe Reader and Acrobat), although Fusion 360 already includes mouse button support for panning and zooming

Simultaneous 1st then 3rd, or 2nd then 3rd mouse button combinations appear to be available.

With 123D  EOL'd   and its lovely mice support . Ive been Begging autodesk to  add in a 123D  like nav support on the mouse control panel.

Right click to orbit and  Hold in one place for the  pop up menu .

I dont ever want or need the  right click  and drag to be a undo.  Ive got the keyboard for that, the pop up for that and the undo button on top  for that.

Autodesk has a very narrow window to get this fixed prior to the massed of people who  are  forced to leave  123D  and who are not happy with tinkercad.

Once the former 123D displaced users  try 360  and  are  peeved about the wonky mice support they WILL look else where! .

Free or not for makers.  people will loose trust in autodesk and  just migrate to other brands!

Now more  then ever this needs to be addressed !

How simple would it be to have a preference option to swap the "right click" (for menu) with "shift + right" click (for mouse orbit)

So right click is mouse orbit

and shift + right click is the menu

VERY SIMPLE!

I totally agree, I'm an avid 123d design user and love its amazingly non complex interface, fell in love with the non keyboard contact for orbit/pan/zoom, i change every other package (re:simplify3d) to do the same.

In this day and age, why isn't Autodesk listening to its customers - free usage or not.

If people love the product - then they say so to others

if they are hard forced to change how they work in a similar product - they will say so

Even Tinkercad has the orbit / pan / zoom on the mouse - i mean C'mon!

So we have two packages from autodesk (123d design and Tinkercad ) that have mouse orbit / pan / zoom

and one (fusion360) that they dont seem to be implementing sole mouse orbit / pan / zoom in - wheres the sense in that honestly.

it's a Slight code change and a tick box - that's all it takes, now that you have EOL'd 123d you should have plenty of devs to implement that.

Your customers will love you for it AUTODESK - believe me!

Matt.

Exacly ,  Ive prased  123D as THE solution for  3D printer owners to learn basic CAD

By a Real CAD company with the hopes they are gonna be a autodesk  * house *  in time and leave the others in the dust.

Frankly  I regret learning  123D had I knew it was the * wrong * way to do things!!!!!!!

had I knew F360 was not the same then I would have   migrated and bought 360 from day One and just never learned on 123D

Or just   never use autodesk products in the first place!! Sketchup is also a major player in maker  and small biz CAD !

Autodesk is shooting themselves in the foot.

From DAY one 123D should have adopted  the 360 mice interface.

EOLs are life but its up to the company to do whats ethical  and  do every thing they can to  ease the transistion .

adding a 6th  mouse opition is  Right moral option to  heal the wound inflicted to the 123D community.

Lets see, meshmixer. 123D and tinkercad ,Netfabb. Meshlab, and just about every other  3D CAD program uses a 123D like  interface.

For now Ive decided to  keep on 123D  as a stand l alone program till you fix 360 and with that is lost profits.

My $40 a month goes to other things not the pockets of  autodesk.

keep your $$$'s lol - give it to those who deserve it - not that Autodesk don't deserve a little $ loving 😛

Saying that, i've found a solution for the right hold mouse orbit...

I've decided to use this bit of free software to fix Fusion 360 short comings....

http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm

Allows for the intercepting of mouse clicks and sends alternate mouse / keyboard presses (configurable)...

configured it as such....

when fusion 360 is active then so is that profile and you can guess the rest.

only set back is it kills the right click gestures - not a big loss for me - others might disagree.

NOW Fusion 360 is usable (from my point of view) - and will be an easy transition from tinkercad and /or 123d - yay!

Cheers,

Matt.

HA! I never knew such  SW existed. Ill give it a try!

It says it supports 5 button mice.  I wonder If I can map 4th button as the pop up right click menue .

Well said Matt.

I tried the XMouseButtonControl referenced by hoodlumj3 and it worked great.  I ended up with a slight twist using the chording capability of XMouseButtonControl to define pressing both right button and left button to be orbit - leaving right button to be the fusion360 default.  This leaves the fusion360 UI the same but just adds a simple way to get orbit - press right button and then left button to begin orbiting.

Setup:

1. Select Chording for right button

2. Set timeout for default action to 450ms

3. Set left button action to  {PRESS}{SHIFT}{MMB}{RELEASE}{SHIFT}

4. Set how to send to option 3 - During

Thanks hoodlumj3 and glenneEZCWY for some outstanding tips on getting Fusion360 to play nice with my mouse, cheers!

YW StutzJr,

Also to update...

With my setup, I've now got it so that when I hold the CTRL key on keyboard I get back default Fusion 360 key functions inc. gestures etc. so it makes it even better without loss of original functionality.

Hope AutoDesk is listening / reading! 😉 LOL prob not!

This is how I enabled that... (or choose a different hotkey)

I think that was all the settings that needed changing, its been a while since I configure this.

Oh also you can target specific windows which XMouseButtonControl will work on, I targeted the main fusion window - makes it less floppy with the right mouse button.

Like this...

A small note, you can also press scroll lock to toggle disabling/enabling XMouseButtonControl (everything) all together.

Try it out! 😉

Cheers,

Matt.

xmouse is a lifesaver....

could not use fusion at all before having a one hand pan/rotate function was present.

assigned it to Middle Mouse button without shift...works like a charm.

Yet another great suggestion that was archived due to lazy users who couldn't be bothered to come here and click the vote button.

That hotkey business just worked wonders for me. Super simple after some reading. and it WORKS!!!

This should not have been archived. This is a very silly problem and should be fixed.

Hi,

Back in the old days before mouse wheels, we had proper 3 button mice. I can understand using the middle button with those type of mice for CAD operations, and they did.

However, I have a disability which makes it incredibly difficult to press and hold the scroll-wheel button for drawing operations such as pan and orbit. I can't reliably use any more than the left and right buttons and scroll wheel.

In this day and age, I cannot believe that there isn't any way to customise mouse/keyboard controls in Fusion360 without having to resort to a 3rd party software package.

It totally makes my experience of using Fusion360 very difficult and not at all enjoyable. From what I have read in this archived? topic and elsewhere, there are many people who want to customise these mouse controls.

davejohns61 My elderly mother has this issue and I will get this issue as I already am showing the signs of Arthritis (runs in my family) and I can tell you I completely understand but this is why I despise Autodesk because they just do not care nor have they ever. In all of this time they have only hired retarded programmers? No, of course not so this nonsense comes from higher up where people are forced to do it the way AD says or it is the highway (my way or the highway). You see people will say it is because F360 is free but I say that it is because it is Autodesk. Go try Inventor and same same only it is around 20-30k per year to be told to do it their way instead of free as it is for F360. Falling on deaf ears when dealing with AD on this issue I am afraid.

My solution, for a 3-button mouse, is to swap the MMbutton with the RMbutton, using X-Mouse Control, which is available as a free download.

Now I can pan with the RMbutton, orbit with Shift+RMbutton, and still have the menu appear when I click the MMbutton.

My problems with using the MMbutton to pan and orbit were that it is difficult to do these whilst holding down the MMbutton without moving the scroll wheel (and zooming) at the same time.

I know I still have to hold the Shift key at times, but this is nothing compared to the scrollwheel problem.
