Editing canvas - position pivot point

Editing canvas - position pivot point

When manually aligning canvas using left/right up/down arrows, currently pivot point remains fixed at the centre of canvas.

This is fine when the canvas is small, but is a problem for large canvases, when you zoom in, to align particular feature away from the centre of canvas.

Zooming in causes the pivot point to move outside of visible screen area, making it impossible to use.

Suggestion is that pivot point for "Edit Canvas" command should be re-positionable to wherever necessary for the job in the manner similar to "Move" command.

Yes, you can calibrate size, but not orientation. Well, that's not a Huge deal, IF you can change the pivot point.

It might also be nice, while they are at it, to add calibrate orientation. That would move the canvas pivot point, and also give another point to orient in a direction.

Example: I took a picture of an alligator clip with y cell phone for reference which has a pivot point and the whole thing is symmetric about that point left and right. So I'd like it rotated so that the center point is there, and the top of the clip is completely vertical.

I have this same struggle.

My current work around is to:

- draw a line from where the image is to where I want it to be.

- use inspect->measure with the XYZ delta setting. Copy the two dimensions I need to a notepad document...

- edit the canvas and paste the two dimensions into the X distance and Y distance fields.

It would sure be nice to be able to reposition the pivot point.....

I thought it would be nice to be able to;

  • Align point to origin (and move the drag handles perhaps?)
  • Draw a line and select 'vertical', 'horizontal', or (perhaps) select an angle and have the canvas rotate so that it would be.
  • Draw/position a circle and align the centre to the origin.

The images I import are often very 'off center', but by the same token I need to zoom in a lot to get accurate positioning (and lose visibility of the drag handles). Something like above I think would be useful?

The ability to align, rotate, position canvasses is so fundamental to the tasks we often encounter, it seems to me to be a massive oversight for Autodesk not to include such a feature. Sketchup is far superior in this respect.
