Ability to select axis lines and origin

Ability to select axis lines and origin

Hi all,

I am doing the V-Belt project. I have found that using any axis as reference or coinciding a sketch line with the axis is simply not possible. Those of you who have used solidworks, know that it becomes so easy to draw complex sketches, if you can use the origin and any axis for reference and coinciding lines. I have always felt very comfortable to use origin and axis for references. I hope that this feature gets added for increased convinience.

I would extend this a bit further:  When sketching you should be able to reference any outside entity (existing edges/vertices/planar faces, planes, axes, origins, etc.) for dimensioning, contraining, or geometry sketching WITHOUT having to project those entities into the sketch first.  Having to project external entities into a sketch in order to use them should not generally be necessary.  If the sketch is strictly 2D (all entities on one plane) projection should be automatically assumed.  If the sketch is 3D (contains entities off the initial sketch plane) there will need to be some mechanism to select between a projected reference or a direct reference (a modifier key perhaps?).

Hi kb9ydn,

I would agree. This would be so much better!!!

Thanks!

Both those solutions are great, and much needed.

I would add Solidworks infinite line is also useful as a reference.

I am truly surprised that this is not one of the first features, to me this is CAD 101. Use origin and axis (and origin planes) as much as possible, especially when mirroring/copying and making patterns.
