Different Display Name for Windows Users

Different Display Name for Windows Users

When using Windows Authentication, the username used by Vault to fill checkin by, check-out by etc. is the DomainName\UserName.   Can you add an option to use the initials or the Display Name of the Windows user. Or add a way to create in Vault a display name for promoted users.

It's such a shame that this was posted 6 years ago and this is still an issue today. Before the connection with the our AD we used trigrams, but now we have domainname\fullname, which in terms messes up all the templates. We'd like to see it being possible to select a nickname, or even just the full name will do.

Having the domainname in our revisiontable just looks silly.

This is a Bear minimum requirement for software and it is still not resolved.

This issue is a show stopper for some.

Are there any update about this request?

All my drawing have the AD username syntax on  "DOMAIN\USERNAMECODE"

And my customers always ask me on who did the drawings.......

I think you are saying your users don’t want to remember things like COMP-INT\stta385 for each user in the company?? 😉

Yes, we know this is a pain. Sorry about the pain.
No immediate update, but we are thinking about this one in the context of some other work we are considering. As you can guess, we can’t talk about the details – company has lawyer ninjas, and I’ve heard rumors about that one guy on another team… I’ve said too much already

This is implemented and available with Autodesk Vault 2022 Release.

The change is really good, and it will be very useful. It is however problematic that the 2022 upgrade automatically change the value to First + Last name on all existing users. That will influence any existing data you have. If that property is mapped to file or used to pass on to other systems like ERP the information might no longer be valid! So keep the functionality but DO NOT automatically change existing values!

THis is  really good functionality to have.  I haven't seen it in action yet,  but I do agree with @sven_strand  don;t change the current fields, make it extra properties on the user.

@alain

This is already implemented, also as an extra property on the user.

Hi Phoebe,

it's already implemented.

Your Login name can differ from your display name now.

So you are able to login e.g. with your Windows account to vault, but the actions you do in vault are diplayed with your real name or a name tag, this propagates also to the revision list you can have in Inventor and AutoCAD.

I agree with gilsdorf_e's take on User Account properties. We need more mappable properties to use in different scenarios.

  • User Name: autodesk\durstma (System Property Viewable in Vault Grid)
  • First Name: Matthew (System Property Viewable in Vault Grid)
  • Last Name: Durst (System Property Viewable in Vault Grid)
  • Email: matthew.durst@autodesk.com
  • Initials: MJD (Revision Block Mapping)
  • Display Name: mdurst (Checked Out\In, Created By, etc.)

We ran into a scenario where we wanted to automatically pull the 'Latest Approver' value (Display Name) to populate the Revision Block. The format required in the Revision Block is to use Initials.

We changed the 'Display Name' to use initials in the User Management, but now all the User properties (Checked Out\In, Created By, etc.) show the initials which is meaningless to us when trying to view who worked on the file.

There seems to be no User Fields (First\Last Name, User Name, Email) other than 'Display Name' in Vault which is now forcing us to change the 'Display Name' back to a more friendly name therefore not being able to use the 'Latest Approver' property to populate the Revision Block with initials automatically through Change State feature.
