Strategies to avoid stock clash with the tool during 3d contour

Hi everyone, 

 

I am trying to use a 3d contour operation to rough out the top shape of a blended wing body model and use a parallel operation to achieve a smoother finish. The problem is that whenever I use the 3d contour operation with a 10 mm flat end mill, the tool starts clashing with the walls of the stock that are left behind during the contour operation. I know that I can use adaptive clearing to avoid this as well as possibly moving to a bigger / longer tool but I was wondering if there is another way to setup the CAM so there is no clashing?

Try enabling Shaft and Holder on the Tool Tab of your operation.  This will ensure that the tool shaft and holder will be considered when avoiding collisions.  You may also consider using the Rest Machining option on your Geometry Tab to ensure that you aren't wasting too much time machining areas that have already been machined with a previous operation.  Thanks!

You are trying to rough with a finish operation. Pocket and Adaptive are meant to approach the final shape by a certain level, the other operations are meant for a finished surface. They are not designed to take the rest material into account. But unless you are cutting foam, I can imagine that your tool will like it if the amount of material is consistent every move.
