Is I gradually increase the distance Fusion appears to keep losing the reference for the start point and changing this number on my.

Try changing the distance by 2mm, do you get an error?

The help missing from dialog box is by design currently. You can access Fusion 360 help with below steps:

• Access online help through:

     

• Search the items you want, take "Pattern" for example:

      

We also have tips and tricks in the right corner of application window for some commands, e.g. Press Pull.

      

For the Pattern on Path issue, I can see the error too when edit pattern feature in your model. Thanks for letting us know the issue. Hope to get more feedback from you again!
