Best approach for T-Splines modelling

I've been trying to model some reasonably simple shapes with t-splines then converting to a surface only to find I end up with splits in the face which is not really ideally what I want. I understand that this is probably cause by having some star intersects or T intersects in the TS body. So what I really want to know is what is the best approach for building a model using TS's?? Would I be better trying to achieve to as close to my finished shape as possible with a TS body then convert to nurbs or should I be using TS bodies that are oversize to what I want then coverting to nurbs and trimming to the shape I want??
