restore boot.ini

I'm in a pinch. I was tweaking some settings and in the process, must have
fat-fingered something in my boot.ini file. My computer won't boot and I
don't want to reinstall the operating system. I saved a backup of the
original file. Can I salvage my system?

You could probably boot into DOS using an old boot disk or your XP disk and
use DOS commands to restore/rename your backup copy. Or maybe the following
will help if that doesn't work.

Probably CANNOT boot into DOS and then access drive since almost all XP
machines are formatted NTFS and the few that aren't are formatted FAT32
and neither can be accessed from DOS which was strictly FAT16. Some
utilities provide bootable cd's (FIX-IT utilities or SYSTEM SUITE both
from VCOM are examples) which would then allow file copying. Of course
an outside source option is not necessary if you have a true Windows
System disk.

Thanks for the posts. I solved my problem. It was the most painful option,
but I needed to get 'er done. I was able to save all of the important files
before reinstalling XP.

For next time, I recreated a missing boot.ini file on a drive that
wouldn't boot (of course not, if the boot.ini file was missing).
Anyhow, I recreated it from scratch by doing this:

boot into Recovery Console off of XP CD then run these two commands in
this order:

BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot
