power supply question

I'm looking at upgrading my computer at home, right now it's piece of junk,
P2-233 with 128 MB ram. I'd like to get a new MB and processor. My
question is, how do I figure out if my existing power supply is enough?

It likely will not work with the new mobo's
(motherboards).  The P4 has a special 4 pin connector, that the old Power
supplies did not have.

Luckily the most new cases come with a power supply
that is suitable for AMD and Intel chipsets, and they start around 35
bucks.  I say that because a new power supply is around 35 bucks
alone.  Might as well get the new case, and salvage the old machine as a
Linux tester, or a print server.

I always recommend Antec Cases and power
supplies.  I have never had any trouble from antec.

this one is 74 bucks with 10.00 shipping from
newegg:

Check out Staples, Pricegrabber, and Newegg for the
best prices.

do you think the new MBs will not fit in the older
cases?

It probably isn't enough. The new MBs require more power, and some (not only
Intel) require a 12v1 (4 pin) connector.
The board may fit the case, but you'll need a new PSU IMO.
Considering the price, I would get a whole new case with PSU. It will also
come with better USB connections.

if your old case is ATX then yes, but not recommended.

If it is an ATX mobo it will fit in any ATX
case.  My next pc is going to be another mini ITX, they are so cool.
Check this site out if you are planning on building up a new pc.

Tiger is quite expensive, there are many other places with much better
deals.

True, but when you can rely upon service, on time delivery (2 days MAX on
normal delivery where I am), and rebate and refund policies that work rather
well, you can't beat'em. I like Tiger because of its product variety and
user-friendly site... not because of the free catalog twice a month. 🙂

He is right, there are many others out there... just make the best decision
based on your needs. Tiger just meets mine.

I think I'm going to just get a new case with power supply.

I guess I'm fortunate enough that if I want to pay normal retail prices that
Tiger offers I can go to two different "warehouse" computer stores in my
area and get the same thing for less on the same day.

That is real nice.

Are they good enough to run Arch Desktop 2004, Viz 4, and other regular
office stuff?

What do you do about a case?

I would get a nice case...without the power supply. Cases vary in price of
course.

My power supply is the Enermax EG465P. It is over $100 if I remember right,
but it is on the top end, has sufficient power, manually adjustable fan
speeds, is relatively quiet, runs cool, easy to install.

How can you get a decent power supply when the case and the power supply is
$50?

Power supply is a key ingrediant to a happy and stable relationship with
your computer.

Jack

Then tell me Mr. Talsky.... What should I look for in a power supply. I'm
not a tight budget too.

My advice is to junk the PII and move to a modern PC. Even though you
may think you can upgrade, the truth is that if the bare bones PC is
that old (mobo, CPU, memory), then the rest of the box is probably
junk too.

Thanks Matt. I've desided if I'm going to do it, I'm building a new one.
I"ll be saving some parts from the old machine to use in the new one to save
costs, My main thing is I need, ah, want something faster than I currently
have.

Keith,

You can probably reuse the floppy drive. That's about it.

nope, I've got an old Gateway that has a curved case front, so it's not the
extra long ejector button. I've got one at work I can get.
