Leica Disto Classic

I'm sorry if this is the wrong group to ask this question. Does anyone use
the Leica Disto Classic 5 and if so, does it actually perform as advertised?
$495.00 does not sound to bad if it performs. I manage 4 manufacturing
facilities in 2 states and measuring high ceilings, pipe, tanks etc. can be
a pain.
Thank you in advance,
David Thomas

We have one (Disto Classic), and paid over $800 for it three years
ago.

But it paid for itself in two months of site visits. The thing is
absolutely fantastic, rugged and accurate. What would take two people
4 hours to measure, can be done with one person in less than two
hours. I can do a whole office suite in minutes, and input the
dimensions in CAD with a high degree of accuracy.

The only thing that would make it better is if it played MP3s.

Thank you Matt. Unless someone posts something negative tonight I will order
one tomorrow morning.

Here is a second positive reply.

I used a Disto Classic to measure 3 complete terminals of the Los Angeles
Airport. Impossible without it. You still need a tape measure, and
although one can do a lot alone, it really helps to have two people. It is
too easy to miss that one critical dimension, but a second guy can remind
you. Also someone needs to hold up a target sometimes when there is no
wall.

It is very accurate up to about 100 feet and we didn't have a problem in
some cases at 200 feet.

We also paid $795 for ours. We dropped it once and the lense cracked. The
warranty took care of it, and they sent us an replacement in about 3 weeks.
Ok that part was lousy, but it was free, and we did drop it ourselves.

I want one of my own. Waiting till they are $100....

Wear baggy pants with big pockets....it can fit into a large pocket.

Without a doubt, buy one. They're fantastic. I insisted on one when I joined
this company two years ago. Now I've got a job to get my hands on it,
everyone else is using it.
Just keep your eye on the dot when you measure, make sure it picks up on the
right surface.
In certain circumstances, it's wise to use it with a spirit level, to keep
the dim accurate. It would be nice to have a bubble on the disto, but then
again we need millimetre accurate dimensions for our work (architectural
metalwork).

The Disto has an accessory bubble that attaches with a magnet.

Also a small scope to see the dot at a distance.

I just received a Disto Classic 5 yesterday. I bought it based on the
favorable comments made in this Newsgroup. The classic 5 comes with a Level
and small scope built in. So far it looks like this device is going to make
my life easier.

like it. OK?
