I'm of the opinion that 17" is the minimum screen size needed to run adsk products.
The user interface takes up too much space to be practical in anything less than that. In a full production envrionment, two (20"+) screens are necessary. Anything smaller than 17", you'll spend too much time panning & zooming & not have enough drawing area to be effective. Or, you'll have too many menus shut down & constantly be opening & closing them.

Do you really need a laptop? If you can use the school's computers when on campus, you may be better off getting a desktop - specifically to have a bigger screen.
As pointed out above, screen size is the number one factor... unless you get into heavy 3-d and rendering.
Then you NEED 2 screens in the 24" size.
