Graphics card upgrade

I am considering up grading my graphics from the on board card to a
"Sapphire Radeon HD3850 512MB AGP card".
The PC is a P4 CPU 3.2GHz with 2.98GB of RAM. running Windows XP
Does anyone know if this card is compatible / suitable for AutoCAD
Architecture 2010

Thanks, Bob

You are running ACA2010 on a classic (nice word) P4?
May I ask why the graphics card upgrade, do you perform a lot of 3D
renderings, or are you hoping for a speed bump up in performance?

Hello Dean

I am starting to do more 3D work and are finding that ACA2010 crashes more
often particularly when using 3D orbit or when changing visual styles i.e.
from wire frame to conceptual or realistic. My hardware vendor suggested a
graphics card upgrade may resolve some of these issues as adding more RAM
would not really have any real effect. Alternatively they are suggesting a
new PC with the following specs may do the job.
Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.00GHz Processor 6M 1333MHz 45nm E8400 4GB DDR2
Memory (DDR 800MHZ)
Any thoughts appreciated?

Regards Bob

Their initial assessment may be correct, but adding a current generation
video card to an old P4 system is a waste of money IMHO.

Your OS needs to be 64bit, Vista 64 with Win7 in your back-pocket for
upgrade. Bump the RAM to 6Gig or more. Explore around here for review of
your graphics card choice.

Oh, I also understand 2010'a first update was released today, install it in
the interim.

Thanks again Dean for your input.
I understand from my vendor that the card proposed is designed for the old
school hardware set up.
That said I heed your comments re the OS and update for 2010.
I note that the update released today is only for AutoCAD & LT.
I shall await and install the ACA2010 update before proceeding with either
of the 2 options. Hopefully this will be soon?

I can't tell what you plan to do with which hardware setup (the original or
a possible new one), but keep in mind that should you keep that aging
hardware, 64-bit OS may NOT be an option for you. Look up exactly which P4
you have - it may be so old that it doesn't have 64-bit capability. Beyond
that you probably couldn't add more than 4Gb of ram either.

All those options would only be availble on new hardware.

Sorry, I forgot you are on ACA2010. Keep an eye on this spot, Autodesk seems
to be rolling out all the 2010 updates one version at a time over the last
week or so:
