DVD authoring resources

Hey Mates,

I need general, as well as specific advice concerning DVD production.

First of all, are there any general informational websites out there that
cover the whole DVD gamut? Secondly, any suggestions on specific DVD burners
that have been working out well for you? Where to get best buys?

On a more specific note, I know that the NTSC/PAL restrictions apply to
analog video, but do they also apply to DVD.

As always, any help is appreciated in advance. Thanks.

I know people in here hate Apples, don't know why but they do but here it
goes. If you really want to make life easy, get a new G5 with Panther.
Otherwise, I like my Pioneer DVD burner. I've had it for a little over a
year now and no problems whatsoever. It's an old model, A-104. They are at
least twice as fast now at a fraction of the price. Most are DVD-RW/+RW,
don't get one unless it is. For some good pc software check out
www.avid.com it's fantastic. As far as NTSC/PAL goes it does make a
difference with digital as well.

Nobody hates apple. Some of us even own one. I think most of us just dislike
the Apple comments that serve no real function except to irritate the Wintel
folks. Most of this group is married to Wintel for a multitude of reasons,
not the least among them is that we're probably a user of Autodesk products.
For most of us, a new G5 isn't an option, no matter how cool it is.

We missed you, Randot.

I agree - more people here are irritated that apple is not a choice,
due to Autodesk's refusal to develop for the platform, rather that
apple's particular perceived (in)ability to create fast hardware,

Matt, I wouldn't say Adesk "refuses" to develop for the Mac platform. If
they did so, it would take a lot of time and resources to rewrite the
software and make sure it works properly, and there is no guarantee that it
would be all that much faster on a Mac. I'd compare it to buying a car in
the US, tearing it apart and reassembling it to be used in Europe (swap the
driver and passenger sides) and then make it run on racing fuel. It can be
done, but is the result worth it?

If people really want Autocad and stuff to run on non-Windows platforms,
then make sure Autodesk in aware of it. Really aware of it.

Autodesk is very aware of it. They have even asked people to email them
about it here is just a little light on that subject
http://www.allosx.com/1052146356/index_html
Also, send emails to the Autodesk product manager and let him know.
eric.stover@autodesk.com he has been asking people input on this.

I think the problem is that it will not increase sales because once they
make a release for the Macintosh everybody will switch. Why would you use a
Microsoft pc when you can now do everything on a much better platform?

personal experience?

There are so very many things wrong with this statement. If Macintosh is
superior, why do so few people own them?

The same reason VHS is in your cabinet in all likelihood. Markets work that
way.

Jimmy, you're just going to get everyone all worked up again. Just drop it,
please? If you want to comment on adesk products do it. If you want to
comment on mac stuff, visit alt.whatever or perhaps www.macmentor.org.
That's a site for like minded folks that I vist quite often.

Macs are like Automatic cars, they are for people who can't handle the real
machines!

dvdrhelp.com (I think one of Jaime's links redirects there) is very
comprehensive.

Also, if you have usenet access, alt.video.dvd.tech and
alt.video.dvd.authoring can be helpful.

> Secondly, any suggestions on specific DVD burners

I can't do that, but I can tell you about a specific one that didn't work
out. I just bought a Sony DRU510A and ended up returning it for a refund
because I couldn't consistently get the disks recorded in it to read/play in
other drives or players. Some too-late research revealed that others had
similar interchange problems with the Sony and many complained about it
being exceedingly finnicky about the brand of media used. A lot of people
report good results with Pioneer brand drives. I just read a post in one of
the alt groups this morning by someone who replaced a Sony with a Pioneer
and said the Pioneer had no problem with media that the Sony consistently
choked on.

> Where to get best buys?

Online vendors like NewEgg.com typically have the best prices, but I'm now
kind of wishing I'd bought the aforementioned Sony locally so I'd have had a
real live person to complain to.
