I am not familiar with the Dell models, but get an Intel Core i7 or Core 2
Quad based machine since you are doing renderings. Both are quad processor
machines, but the i7 is newer and therefore costs a little more. An OpenGL
video card will cost more, but should not work any better than the Direct X
9 video cards. Windows 7 64 bit is a must at this point. Get at least 4 GB
of RAM and more if you can afford it. Note that the Core 2 Quad takes RAM
in 2 GB increments and the Core i7 takes RAM in 3 GB increments, so go to 6
GB at least for the Core i7. Watch the hard drive speeds. Get at least
7200 RPM. I don't know if there is any thing faster in laptop drives, but
5400 RPM is too slow.

Apple is ok, but costs more for the same computer and there is the headache
of multiple operating systems. Unless you are a computer geek (who would
not ask the original question) or have an Apple already, I would eliminate
Apple from your search. HP, Dell, Toshiba, Panasonic, etc are all good
brands. Alienware has been good too, but a little pricy from what I hear.
Sony may be ok, but everything I have bought from Sony has left me sorry I
did. I have not bought one of their laptops, but cassette players, DVDs,
etc. have all been lacking in the consumer grade items.
