Why does uploading a file take so long.

I might not have the speediest internet connection (7Mbit) but today I uploaded a tiny STEP file of 68 KByte (!) and the whole process took between 2 and 3 minutes.

And this is not an isolated experience, uploading files takes far to long, as does saving and updating files.

This is a real workflow killer.

If fusion 360 wants to make it as a professional tool this is simply not acceptable and You have to do something about it.

Cheers, Norbert

The process for uploading files is a little different for Fusion 360. The Upload command will give a meter for upload progress; however, a different procedure is occurring...

1. User uploads a file to the cloud
2. The file is added to the queue for the Autodesk Translation Service (cloud-based interoperability service)
3. The file is converted to the Fusion 360 format and saved in the user's project in the cloud

4. Upon opening the file, a local copy will be synced for Fusion 360 to work on

Your Internet bandwidth can play a role, but only with upload and opening portion of the process. If you suspect that you are having network connectivity issues and are using a proxy server or firewall, you should review the below link to insure that the network is configured properly for Fusion 360.

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Netw...

Traffic and file complexity may impact the rest of the performance when uploading CAD data.

You'll note if you open your Dashboard, drag and drop a file onto a project, that the file will be uploaded very quickly but not converted to a native Fusion 360 format. See the below screenshot for clarification.

There are some benefits to Fusion 360's approach; for example, you can upload and convert multiple files by queueing multiple at one time. You also don't need to install Fusion 360 on a computer to actually import a file. Instead, you can log into your hub (link below) and upload/translate a file using any computer.

myhub.autodesk360.com

The converted files are stored in the cloud and can be shared with other Fusion 360 users or you may send a public or password protected URL to the file.

I hope, this help explain why there may be some extra time required to upload a file and why the wait might be worth it. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Thank You for taking the time to explain what is going on "behind the scenes" when uploading a file.

While I understand and appreciate (to a certain extend) the benefits of this, the point I was trying to make is that the time it takes between selecting even the tinyist local file and being able to work with it, simply is too long.

You explained in some detail what the problems on your end are, and I as a user may or may not be interested in this.

What I am surely interested in is my workflow: waiting 3 minutes to work on a small STEP file is too much of a disrution to be acceptable for me.

It also seems somewhat counterproductive to the whole "direct modeling" approach of fusion 360.

So in short if the slow upload/conversion process is related to your cloud/server infrastructure, hardware, software or similar, I suggest Autodesk to look into optimizing these.

I am not rying to troll here, just explaining my concerns with this particular issue.

And I suspect other users might see this as a problem too.

Cheers, Norbert

Hi Norbert,

Appreciate your candid comments. Users like you who share such data make Fusion better.

We are looking at various pieces in the upload/translation pipeline (user -> cloud -> user) to figure out where the delays are happening and how to improve the scale out.

Can you supply your filename/time of upload so that we can sift thru the logs at the backend? We might come back to ask for client side logs to analyze your Fusion client's conversation with our Cloud Services.

Thanks! for your engagement,

Hello Shrirang.

Sorry for the somewhat late reply.

I am going to send you a private message with all the information about the upload.

I agree with this.  I'm patient for a solution but it is a blight on the overall experience of fusion360.  I should be able to upload and then use those parts fairly quickly.  I've been sitting here waiting 5 minutes now for the sync and I might as well have just re-modelled it in fusion360 if I'm going to wait 5 minutes to use an imported .sldprt etc etc.

I'm patient but I do hope that fusion360 is doing something about it.  It would be nice to not have this roadblock to the user experience.

I actually agree here with nogeelen. The time even small files need to be available in the dashboard is unacceptable for professional use when you have to upload multiple files. Even simple 2d drawings can take minutes and if you have few drawings you look at half an hour or so in waiting time.

Local load guys is just a must - sorry everybody else does that - there is no way around it.

Hi Claas,

Have you tried the "New Design from File" command? It was added in the June update and supports all the neutral file formats. It doesn't negate the need to keep improving the upload pipeline but its a nice workflow for a majority of the cases.

@charegb

I looked at it and I have few observations:

In general loading a step file right into a new Fusion works well.

However what is not possible is to load a STEP file into an existing design.

That renders the import ability half usable.

Also it cannot load DXF or DWG right into a design or sketch.

So it seems the majority of tasks still have to be done via the upload function.

Yeah, sometimes dashboard just takes a long time to load and I didn't even open Fusion on another computer.

I just tried to upload and it went really quickly.  I'm not sure if this is the 'new' standard for uploading speed but if so I'm completely satisfied.

I have to agree as well.  I cannot find a reasonable explanation to why a small file that is drawn in autocad needs so much time to transfer to Fusion 360.  I am sitting on a 76mb fiber optic connection and it still takes forever to upload a file that was drawn on autocad in dwg format.  Two things affect uploading speed ... one is internet connection speed and the other is hardware to convert and store the file.  Both should be almost instanateous with the internet speed I have and with the hardware available.  Surely there is a technical solution to this problem ... it really is extremely annoying as when you are working with several people who are sending you autocad files that you want to make use of, it becomes almost impossible and just easier to draw the entire thing natively from scratch!

I have been trying to import a small 6K model and it literally takes 25+ minutes to load. I tried importing it as a stp file, an IPT file with no luck. Autodesk needs to fix this asap. There's no point in using Fusion if it's going to take this long every time I need to render....

Frustrated

I wish this would get addressed sooner rather than later, STILL trying to import a local file takes ages.

I'm sitting here idle for several minutes waiting and waiting for my files to be ready to open.

Seriously, please fix this mess.

This thread is over a year old and they still have not fixed it?  How much money do we need to lose using Autodesk?  Is this being worked on?
