Opinion: Are these commands "Create" or "Modify"?

All,

We've received feedback from a handful of users that the location of some of our modeling commands is not intuitive (for example, the Fillet command is located in the "Create" menu, while some users feel that it should be available from the "Modify" menu).  We would like to get your input.  The commands highlighted in the image below bring about the most debate, but we're happy to hear your feedback on others as well.

Do you feel that the highlighted commands belong to "Create" or "Modify"?  Are there other commands that you feel are miscategorized, or otherwise difficult to find?

Thanks for your feedback.

I think I've become used to the layout now, but I do remember my during my first experience looking for "fillet" under modify. Though, I think I'd look to Create a hole... Maybe I think of it as additive vs. subtractive modeling? Just my two cents. Looking forward to hearing what our real users think!

Hi Charles,

As a Fusion 360 user, I would like to add my two cents.

Model workspace:

  • These commands should be moved from "Create" to "Modify":  Fillet, Chamfer, Shell, Draft
  • This command should stay in "Create":  Hole
  • These commands could belong to either "Create" or "Modify": Thread (more like "Create". I don’t have a strong opinion). Thicken (more like "Modify". I don’t have a strong opinion.)

Patch workspace:

  • These commands should be moved from "Create" to "Modify": Merge (I have a very strong opinion about that). Fillet, Chamfer
  • This command should stay in "Create": Offset
  • This command could belong to either "Create" or "Modify": Thicken (more like "Modify". I don’t have a strong opinion.)

Note that the Thicken command in the Sculpt workspace correctly belongs to the "Modify" menu. That Thicken is a bit different from the Thicken commands in the Model/Patch workspaces.

I also look forward to hearing from our real users.

I agree with Glenn's points.  I don't have a big problem with it now, having got used to the arrangement, but still tend to look for things like fillet in Modify. A more intuitive arrangement will probably help new users.

I vote for 'Modify' because you can't create a placed feature unless you allready have a feature to place them on...

How do you modify something if it doesn't exist yet? You create holes, fillets, chamfers, shells, etc.

They should be moved to 'Modify' as they are all modifications to pre-existing features

It drives me BONKERS that these tools are miscatagorized.

The complaints are valid, ALL of these commands are appropriate for "Modify"... move the lot of them.

Great feedback.  I'm planning to make the following changes:

  • Model workspace: Move Fillet, Chamfer, Shell & Draft commands to the "Modify" menu.
  • Patch workspace: Move the Merge command to the "Modify" Menu

Many thanks to all who responded!
