Utilize all cores and GPU - Opencl support?

Hi,

I run Smoke on a 16 core Machine, using Nvidia gtx770.

Most of the Time the cpu cores idling around, while the gpu runs on full load. Why is smoke not utilizing all cpu ang gpu cores? This would be possible by using opencl. This would also allow scaling up processing power by adding additional gpus. Why not?

Hi Michael,

There are surely things we can improve in Smoke regarding the GPU and CPU usage.

This is something we might have a look in a forthcoming release but there is no ETA about when this could be done at the moment.

Please let us know if you have any other questions,

Regards,

How do you now? As far as I know, this is a development decision and the default OpenGL context is basically utilizing the main display gpu. All other gpu´s have to be enabled in the code by implementing gl context sharing.

Only in OpenCL without context sharing on the new mac pro a cl_context is created from the device array and enabled to utilize both devices.

I understand that Smoke is only utilizing OpenGL

I believe this is a legacy feature. Since Smoke comes from Linux... And 20 years ago there was no Open CL. I hope to see support for both graphic cards on the Mac Pro. It is absurd to for AD not to use it, unless things get very fast and into flame territory...
