Thank you, Steve. Reported it.

Forum question: why doesn't my forum name match my profile name? Don't want to use my account name.

I am currently in contact with an Autodesk support representative. After suggesting I delete the preference folder, which didn't solve the problem, she has since said that it is likely hardware related, as the two Intel HD cards they tested on were both workstation cards. I wrote back with a link to an Intel PDF showing that the P series and normal HD series are virtually identical, so we'll see how she responds.

I know that the newest driver for the Surface Pro 2 Intel HD 4400 is version 10.18.10.3262

I am considering trying to downgrade to 9.18.10.3220 (the driver stated as working on the Autodesk qualification page), but I am not sure if that driver is compatible with 4400 (or if it is only for 4000). Does anyone have a 4400 running with driver version 9.18.10.3220?

Don't know - mine are the same (bar the underscore) so it's difficult to tell. Might be better to post in the Website Support Forum if you really need an answer. I'm a mere Moderator, not an Admin, so anything to do with accounts is way above my pay grade 😉

Hi sweitz, as a new Surface Pro 2 owner and Autodesk user, I'd like to invite you to visit my blog SurfaceProArtist.com. I'm trying to build a community of artists there who can help each other out with these types of specific issues.

Thanks Steve. I posted over there. It's kind of weird to have a profile that seems to be useless. Maybe it's only a legacy thing.

Thanks, I've actually been to that blog before - just posted something yesterday on an older post, regarding Mdubox, actually. I'll keep an eye on it.

By the way, it looks like you have Mudbox 2011 listed as working - if that's the case, I will try to see if I can get a copy of 2011 via my support contact. We're on a service agreement via the school at which I teach, and I've been able to get licenses for old software before... here's hoping ; )

Good news - Autodesk is aware of the issue and is actively looking into it. I have been talking with an Autodesk support specialist about the issue, and after noting how the qualified Intel graphics cards are near-identical to those in the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, she said she;d raise the question with the Quality Assurance (QA) department. The following is the response I received:

I spoke with QA and development on this issue.

They actually have another report  that is very similar to your issue. They are in the process of investigating why . Mudbox 2014 Extension on HD 4000, and HD 5000(4th generation) were tested to be fine. The crash points to the Intel driver and is specific to the 4000.

For the testing, Mudbox QA team hasn't test on Surface Pro 2, but as you mentioned, they were assuming HD 4400 to be identical to HD 5000. However, this does not look like this is the case.

They do have a plane to add multi touch support for Surface Pro. They are in the process of setting this up.

They will continue to investigate and hopefully either this will be addressed with a Service Pack release or an Intel Driver Release.

As I hear more, I will be sure to let everyone know.

An update from my previous post - it turns out, I didn't do enough experimentation last time. After trying one or two fo the built in meshes and finding that they crashed, I moved on to other things... but I have returned to Mudbox experimentation on my Surface Pro 2, and after a few short minutes, got some great results.

First, not every built in mesh crashes - the human body model works fine, as does the car, though the head, cube, sphere, cow, etc. do not. Odd to say the least.

More importantly, though, it would appear that brining in meshes from other software - like Maya - works fine (both as FBX and via the "send to Mudbox" command).

Last, I put the environment variable in to skip the graphics card check - and Maya 2014 Service Pack 2 (NOT the extension) works just as well as the extension (with the same crash problems on most built-in models).

In short, Mudbox 2014 mostly works fine with Intel Graphics, assuming you don't start with the built-in meshes (and, if you don't have the extension, you need to create an environment variable that reads: MUDBOX2011_SKIP_GRAPHICS_CHECK with a value set to 1).

Hopefully others find this as good news as I do : )

Since finding this thread (thanks all) and installing the 2014 extension, I now have it running on my Surface Pro. A match made in heaven! (I get the same issues with those meshes sweitz)

But....I can't get the multi touch features to work. It's a real shame as the video makes it look very cool.

Tried checking & unchecking the box in preferences, a few restarts, no joy. Any ideas?

Hey, Mark. This is an issue I'm having, too... back when I was talking back and forth to my Autodesk Support rep about the original crashing issue, she said that she talked to QA, and that they were looking into the issue, since they also assumed everything would work fine on Intel HD 4400. She then added, "They do have a plane to add multi touch support for Surface Pro. They are in the process of setting this up. " Clearly, she meant "plan," not "plane," but the message is clear - they are working on it.

It is definitely odd that it doesn't just work, though. One guess as to why it doesn't work now might be due to the palm rejection built into the Surface Pro - but that should only kick in when the pen is in range of the screen, and it definitely doesn't do any multitouch when the pen is nowhere near, as I've tried. Like you, I've also gone into the settings to double check multitouch is turned on - which it is. I am pretty sure the palm rejection can be disabled in the Surface Pro's preferences - need to double check - but perhaps that'll let the multitouch work. Just a guess - likely not going to work.

We'll probably have to wait for the official multitouch fix for Surface Pro... I agree that it looks like it would add a huge amount of functionality.

The March 11, 2014 firmware update for the Surface Pro 1 and 2 include a new Intel video driver and this appears to have corrected the issue with crashing of Mudbox 2014 SP1 Extension when loading some of the prefab objects.

Unfortunately, multi-touch gestures still aren't working, but this is definitely progress! I'm hoping the 2015 version will include the needed fix.
