I have a student trying to export their project from one of our computers but when the export menu comes up there are not local devices ready but simply the message "(Local media not available)". I tried the solution suggested above but it does not work for me at all. Basically the student's projcet is stuck inside Smoke but with no way to export it. Panice stations as I cannot find a solution anywhere!

Cheers

Tony

P.S. I looked on the subscription website for the latest update to see if that works, but I don't seem to have been given the latest perpetual licence update with my subscription. What gives!

Hi Joel,

Many thanks for the tip. I'm at home now, but will try the drag and drop method tomorrow morning (for it was the right click that brought up that lack of hard disk/media!).

Cheers

I've narrowed it down but really to problems, rather than a solution.

In the Smoke preferences and "background job settings" the "available local services" list is not populated by any entries whatsoever. The backburner manager to the left is listed as "2221" (the name of the computer name as listed in Apple's sharing preferences ("2221.local"). Should I be changing any text documents to read localhost. I'll carry on taking a look around in previous Area posts, but if anyone has a quick suggestion for a solution, I'd very much appreciate it. As it is, the student's work is trapped inside of Smoke with no way out!

I did update to the latest service pack of Smoke (though I am very hurt that it did not appear in my subscription!) and now the hard disks do show up on export, but again Smoke cannot make contact with backburner.

Cheers

Tony

P.S. Here are my logs, if any help:

I've sort of sorted it out, but thank God that I was able to take a far and wide look around as, besides some quick response from the great Joel Osis yesterday, this forum's sheer lack of life and, most sadly, lack of response from AD really and clearly confirms, and in a loud and clear state, what I have felt for too long long time now: it is like communing with the dead and the buried. I could not feel more indifferent to this software when I compare my feeling about it a few years ago. When once there was momentum, now there is a strong feeling that this whole package is on the verge of flatlining. And this is Autodesk, not some small hokey sofware house.

I don't know where the life and the already minute community of Smoke and Flame seems to be hiding out these days, but it certainly is not here or on the Facebook group. These places are dead as a Quantel dodo. Walking dead sofrware. From once frequence visits on my part, I now visit this forum around once every two weeks at most, when once I visited all that time. Nothing now is really being said or ansered to. Nobody cares. I've seen this pattern before.  Once it seemed such a "relatively" vibrant place, but now there is more life in a morgue, or in a forum devoted to the Commodore Amiga's VideoToaster, by some passionate peeps who just wish to keep it going, like some re-enactors of some middle ages battle. This is deadware. The future really is with Blackmagic and The Foundry and AD, in this dept at least, seems to be one some strange suicide mission and the ultra-talented and admirable programmers really should evacuate temselves from quick as sharp. Like that scene out of Citizen Kane you should all move across to that other newspaper. I have a feeling that Resolve+Fusion will be the place to go. Resolvsion. This sheer lack of life and response from any official AD employees on the Area (you pathetically put all your eggs into the great Brian Mulligan's very giving basket but, as the basket reference suggests as a danger, he has now left the Smoke/Flame orbit for fresh pastures and what are you doing to plug this very great gap? F*ck all) again confirms something that I have felt for a very very long time and felt very very very strongly: AD does not seem to care one little sh*t about about Smoke and I am tired and so very very boredof defending this small piece of out of the way land to my students when AD seems to have no energy at all in pushing it and polishing it. Dead software walking. This place is grinding to a halt as in some sort of a coma. There is simply nothing at all going on with it that I can see, and this is something that is TOTALLY suicidal, as I have felt for some time and voiced some safe time ago. I hate to say then that "I told you so", but if I rewind back a year or two, this is exactly where I felt, and in a way knew, that this software was going: Nothing to do with the mac platform and a retreat back to the Linux ultraexpensive model that nobody else at all is plouging. Museums wait for such attitudes. Suicidal, not even in the midterm, let alone the long.  I might as well be recommending that they use Deluxe Paint IV on the Amiga, for the chance of contact now that students will have with this sotware. Probably the last message I send on this board, and I really used to love and admire this piece of software that I really now just think of as sad...

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony

Not much to say really, i'll be sad to lose touch so send me a direct email. You was one of the valued fresh faces around here and I liked having a new perspective to functionality based on yor different software experiences to my own.

Its funny how we have all seen this before though, in the Flame forum I likened shaders as a plugin solution to Jeff Banke's ADO page turns... i think the simple reality is history repeats.

Smoke on Mac never really took off in the numbers it needed to be a worthwhile venture but on the flip side the Flame is actually bouncing back from its turmoil and the reconnection to custom tweaked hardware. Most of my gripes have been to do with speed and whilst the new GUI does still slow things down and get in the way the hotrodding of flame 2015 under the hood kind of offsets it.

But I understand your pain, not everyone wants to buy a Flame and AD should be finding a way to address Smoke issues or just kill it and move on.

All's well that ends. That's why its called finishing.
