Import 3d wire data from Iges or STEP files into Fusion 360º

Import 3d wire data from Iges or STEP files into Fusion 360º

Hello,

The 3D sketching capabilities of F360 are interesting but they don't match the flexibility and ease of use of more traditional nurbs modelers. In those apps I'm able to create a 3d wireframe with splines, arcs, lines, etc, that set the basic patch layout for building surfaces in a fraction of the time that it takes me to do it in F360.

But there's also an emerging trend of 3D sketching tools such as the about to be released Umake app ( https://www.umake.xyz )that allows designers to build 3d wireframes even more intuitively and faster. I've been testing this particular app and its workflow with Fusion 360º and was surprised to find that Fusion could not import wires from IGES or STEP files, but only 3D surfaces or solids.

From all the 3D apps that I use, F360 is the only one that don't have this feature.

So my suggestion is that Fusion 360º should be able to import wire 3d data from IGES and STEP files.

This feature will help optimize the design workflow by allowing the usage of 3D wires made in other software in early stages of concept exploration.

Best regards,

Carlos

Do you have Rhino it will import IGS and export DWG, that should get the info into Fusion.

Similar problem with my application case: I use Fusion 360 to import STEP files generated by optical design programs like ZEMAX exporting rays as wires entity type. Because Fusion 360 imports only surfaces and solids entity types, the rays are not imported in the model, reducing the effectiveness of Fusion 360 for this application. I hope Autodesk will introduce the possibility to import wires entity types from STEP files in Fusion 360 soon, as Inventor already does.

Hi,

Can you share a few files as examples with me? bankim.charegaonkar@autodesk.com

Thanks,

Hi @Anonymous

Looking at our Autodesk Translator docs, we do support wire import for both STEP and IGES.  I'll find out why they are not showing up.

Can you show an example where this is working?

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous

If you have a sample file from UMake we would be happy to test it.

Hi Colin,

Sorry for taking so long to reply you but haven't visited the forum lately.

In the following link you can find a Umake file that was exported as iges and that has wires and surfaces as the image shows...

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25876548/Wirefreme%20Tests/Wireframe_test.iges

In other 3D modelers I'm able to import both surfaces and curves without any sort of problems but in F360 I can only import the surfaces.

@Anonymous - Sorry for the delay.  Can you send me the file directly?  colin.smith@autodesk.com.

The link you provided is dead.

Thanks

The Fusion translator should import wires from IGES and STEP.  We were unable to test UMAKE exports to find out why the translator was unable to pull the wire data.  If this comes up again we will address it.

On this problem I have created a step wireframe from RHINO I reimported and is OK I have also exported a 3d DWG but both of these show up empty in fusion. Any thoughts of possible import.

Hello,

I'm also running into issues where imported wireframe IGES show up empty on Fusion.

See linked for example:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2qmf6j5xqg1wc8l/52_3007_1_R0.igs?dl=0

Was a work around ever found for this?

Is the option of exporting wireframe IGES or STEP files in the plans?

Thanks,

Nic

@colin.smith I just tried exporting a wire frame box from Rhino saved as a STP and IGS file and both are blank when imported and opened in Fusion. I tried local import and cloud both have no sketch info! Opened both files in ZW3d and the wire frame box imports correctly, as this is the ideastation I can't attach the files. Don't think this idea should have been archived.

@Anonymous 3d DWG should work, see this thread for a Rhino export setting that works well.

Just want to add, if I upload the IGS file to a project through chrome I can view the wireframe but when I select the IGS file in Fusion's data panel and convert to a Fusion design the translated file's empty.

Hi all,

any traction on this issue, I have a lot of old .igs wireframe design files that I need to import. Originally from soldiworks but no longer have the design files (nor solidworks)

Thanks

Any updates on this?

As the idea has been archived then no nothing is happening. Guess not enough people want it.

So if I take Probe data with a CMM/3D scanner and try to use that in Fusion I have no options (clearly as I tried already).

A basic usability of an IGES file is NOT available to be used in a CAD software? Its a big oversight.

I strongly recommend that the Fusion team address simple things like this (along with a myriad of other seemingly small shortcomings which greatly affect the actual functionality of the software as a commercial tool)
