LAN Freewheel

Is there a way to use Freewheel in a LAN environment?

I do not want to upload all of our drawings online and would just like to use it in our local network environment on an intranet to preview dwf's.

Is this possible? Or is there another 'previewer' available which is similar to Adobes PDF embedded reader?

Thank you for your request. At this time Project
Freewheel is a technology preview from Autodesk Labs where we are exploring
design collaboration capabilities using just a browser. We host it ourselves.
Autodesk Freewheel is the production version of the service that allows viewing
of design data using just a browser. We have gotten this request for a
self-hosted Freewheel and is something we may offer in the future. When a file
is uploaded to Project Freewheel or Autdoesk Freewheel, the file name is only
generally known to people to whom you send it. It is as secure as
email.

A self-hosted solution is really the only way we could use this product due to privacy. Without going into too many details, we cannot show the files we have on the public internet.

The product is superb and would be absolutely ideal if we could host it on our own server.

Are there any plans to make this available and, if so, when will that be?

Thank you.

I heard this same request over and over at
Autdoesk University.

Yea, and everybody wants it to be free and it should provide an API so we
can integrate the application with the rest of the company's assets. And
you've been hearing this in so many words and in so many ways for ~20 years
and in all of those ~20 years I've never ceased to be amazed to continue to
hear you or someone like you play dumb like its the first time this notion
has come up.

Don't you get tired of being such a fraud?

I did not intend to imply that this is the first time this came up. I am
sorry if you took it that way. Quite the contrary - you will see that in
November of 2007, I wrote a blog article:

http://labs.blogs.com/its_alive_in_the_lab/2007/11/can-we-host-fre.html

Note that it is in the form of a frequently asked question. My response to
the previous post was to echo that the poster's request was backed up by
what we heard at AU.

Please explain then how the proposed web services are intended to be used.
As presented prima facie is more of the same fundamental concern that
customers do not want your company to possess any of their data. The
customer wants to retain complete control of the only thing that matters to
them; their digital assets. What part of that fact which has prevailed for
these past ~20 years continues to be misunderstood then?

Project Freewheel gives people the ability to upload their data, share it
with others, and then remove it. Our very successful Buzzsaw and
Constructware solutions treat data in a similar fashion. The security of
Buzzsaw and Constructware is higher. People must be invited to get the data,
The security of Project Freewheel is about the same as email. I recognize
that this is not sufficient for projects like nuclear power plants or
similar situation.

In our instance of Project Freewheel, we selected the hardware, we did the
install by hand, and we provide the support. By "we" I mean the Autdoesk
Labs team. There is a lot more to this to provide this same capability to
others. Suddenly you need an installer that will work on a variety of
hardware and operating systems. You need an infrastructure in place to
handle defect reports that come in from the field. You need a team of people
to assist in troubleshooting. So just like that this "free" product can
drain resources that could be devoted to other things like AutoCAD,
Inventor, or Revit.

I understand the request for this. As I said in my original reply, it was
echoed at AU. Autodesk takes these factors into consideration when planning
future products, services, or releases.

I consider the implied value of the Web Service disingenuous as it is
currently presented and not even worth writing the code. As an aside, what
happened to the results of the developer's contest? I know there was a
"winner" announced but what happened to what he produced? Perhaps I have
overlooked or missed something but nary a word or a bit or byte seems to
have come of it.

1. Given the sensitive nature of your data, I recognize that Project
Freewheel as define today does not meet your needs. On the other hand,
thousands of people currently use Project Freewheel each day and usage is
growing.
2. Steve Potter was the winner. I believe the DWF marketing team made some
kind of announcement.
