3D issues & dwf potential?

Our incompleted drawing of our facility is mostly in 3D with AutoCad 2007. It appears that the FM Facility Manager & Link work strictly in 2D. Is there a compelling reason to limit the software to just polylines? It seems that the ability to have 2 way communication with both 3D & 2D solids, blocks, polylines & other entities would be the ideal. By 2 way communication I mean when multiple items are ctrl clicked on in the database form or report the items would change color or highlight or show text or blinks or something etc. When we select the entities in the drawing the selection set should automatically or at our option immediately show as a report. When an entity that was originally put in to the database was deleted the corresponding record would also delete. If there was any orphaned records without a corresponding entity it would have the ability to convey that to the user somehow.

I hope this make sense to you. We have over a hundred pieces of equipment & fixtures which in turn have many individual parts within them. Database of related tables for the parts & procedure info should be connected with these items along with the actual numerous inventory areas that have the specific standby maintenance parts located.

I have read & gone through Scott McFarlane's book on Db Connect & am somewhat familiar with that approach but it seems that FM Desktop could be better. Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions! We are always listening for input from customers.

I have been having some interesting conversations lately with a number of customers who are interested in smart 3D data for maintenance purposes. We are looking at supporting the import of asset and equipment information from Revit and ADT. That would enable us to perform the sort of associations that you describe for inventory, maintenance information, and maintenance procedures. It sounds like you would like to have this in more generic fashion so that you could define your own assets and parameters and represent them as blocks in AutoCAD. We'll put that on our FMDesktop wishlist for consideration as well.
