Maya 2012 Hotfix 4 FBX plugin 2013.3 Import crash

I'm using a bat file to start up maya, open an fbx, [stuff], and export.

 

There are many cases of maya crashing on import of the fbx files.  It is very inconsistant when it happens.  On the same file in the same circumstances (as far as I can tell) it sometimes works and sometimes crashes.

 

Heres one of the crash logs - they are all quite similar:
